Me V's Z3 M Roadster
#1
Him:
BMW 3.2 Z3 M Roadster
K&N Induction Kit
Me:
UK MY97
Full Decat
ITG Panel
Dawes Device
Running at 247 Bhp
Time and location:
Early this morning on private roads.
Friend of mine decided we would have a play this morning on the way to work.
From a standing start through to 100mph absolutely nothing in it. After 100mph the 3.2 litre engine started to tell and we backed off at 120 as he was starting to catch me.
Let him go in front and tried it from 30mph with exactly the same result....nothing in it. The BMW has longer gearing, so I had to remember to change gear when it suited me (ie on full boost) not when I hit the redline. This resulted in a slight drop back with my gear change which I then regained with his.
I know it's not big or clever, but it did improve the 60 nile drive to work this morning and the private road that we were on was very quiet at that time of the morning.

Yes indeed - the z3 M roadster is a beautiful machine! And the sound inside is to die for. There is not much between the wrx and z3M - except once it becomes wet .....
One of many nice bm´s we had on a training day in Sweden

I raced a 01 model ZM3 roadster in my old scoob. MY98 with induction kit and exhaust. Much to the discust of the two in the Beemer, we took off in 2nd from a roundabout and were neck and neck all the way up to full in third gear, slowed for another roundabout, then off again, nothing in it at all. Im sure it would have been faster if we didnt have to slow down at all. But I was delighted with the savage quickness of my standard scoob and its ability to match something like that.

Its not a road race, its a dash on a short stretch of the motor way, with no traffic in front, taking the opportunity to enjoy your fast car safely. Great fun, highly recommend it. When / where else are you going to get the opportunity to use it. Some people obviously prefare to drive slow all the time.

The advantage of the M Roadster over the M Coupe and any Scooby is obvious !
If you take the roof off it is much easier to replace it on the M Roadster.

Yep Coupe is same engine but is listed a second or so quicker to 60 than the roadster and gets to the ton in 11.6 magazine tested. Expect it'll be a fair bit stiffer too improving the handling. I know a guy who used to drive a GT3 and then an M Coupe, he said that on the road there was practically nothing between them speed wise. I guess a scoob would need to be 350bhp ish to keep up with an M coupe?
Edited to correct a time after i checked it

Well, to a 100 is nice, but in germany the speeds go WAY higher.... And yes it was awesome fun - we also had M3, z8 (now that is a beast!) other z3´s, 330, 325 compact, 7 series sport and a few others. Would recommend any driving course available - you learn just how crappy most of us are at driving when put into situations... And it is just plain fun

Didn't clarkson in one of his videos race a Evo6, P1, Alfa GTV v6 and an M Coupe over half a mile. Before you all start, it was not fixed and a properly conducted test, the M coupe won by a significant amount.
I have a scooby to !
They are fast machines ! simple as !

Lol the speeds go way higher until the limiter that BMW so kindly fit
Nuclear - We're talking M Coupe not M3
Like i said M coupe does the ton in 11.6, a 22B tested by the same mag/testers is 13.1, a P1 13.3 and a new STI 13.0. These scoobs all have 280ish BHP i think, so i was guessing 350bhp roughly needed to knock another 1.5 seconds off their times?
What sort of power would a Classic UK turbo be running with Decat/d/pipe and Induction? 260bhp ish?

Nat21, the BMW is also RWD, less drivetrain power loss than the 4wd scooby, alot more power on the road.
These things are monster fast, 3.2 straight six, 321bhp

ZM3 Coupe is a very fast machine indeed as my mate has one which i have driven quite alot.
Absolute laugh getting it sideway even when its a bone dry road,
but to be honest and even he agrees its no match for my STI5 Type R
up to about 100-120mph probably due to the stupidly short gearing the R has.
Above a ton he does start gaining though, anyway a think you would need as said at least 325-350bhp in a uk spec classic to match it.
ZM3 roadster is an easier contest as it is alot heavier.
Still both cars are awesome.

Lets get this straight.
The Z3 M Coupe is the same engine and power as the Z3 M Roadster. The coupe is slightly heavier due to the removable hard top.
The M3 is a completely different beast.

Sorry Nat you are right, the Z3 M Coupe doesnt have a removable roof........but you can get a hard top for the Roadster.
Fek me....all I said was I had a play with my mates roadster this morning.....how bored is everyone!
Fun though.

no room in z3 for six speed box apparently.
whoever said the clarkson test wasnt fixed is wrong.
It was a 22B not a P1, and the shot was taken 20 times until the BMW result was achieved. the owner of that 22B was the on this site, the video was sponsored by BMW and the runs were repeated until the turbo cars were suffering from heatsoak.
cant remember who the 22B owner was though. Perhaps he will speak out.
