Coming back from cousin's and I had to slow down to a stop because a car was turning in.

Then from no where this white VW polo comes screeching to a stop. All you can see is smoke from his front tyres.

I braced myself and ready for the impact and nearly crapping myself. The driver was a young lad and from his face expression it seemed he crapped himself as well.

Very close call.

That schreeeaaachhhh has to be one of the worst sounds going. It's bad enough when you're in a car, but even worse when your sat on a bike!!!

Believe me, the worst sound is the grating of metal on metal.

I had a good one on the M3 queing to go on the M25.
Sat in stationary/v.slow traffic on inside lane and saw fast approaching t**t in rear view mirror. Had to pull onto hard shoulder to get out of his way. Just as well - he stopped alongside me.
Traffic got moving again then next time it stopped he did the same thing. This time I let him go infront before pulling off the hard shoulder.
Anyone better that????
Mark

I had similar experience on the M4 .. rain pouring down and all of a sudden see a traffic jam !!

Start praying here .. very conscious of not locking up .. manage to stop the car about 4 inches behind the car in front (couldn't even see his number plate).

Managed to give him a friendly nod to say 'Thank f*** for that' !!
Phew !

Had a tractor with a huge great metal hoe on the back pull out in front of me last week whilst chugging home from work - no problem slowing for me, but had to follow it round a tight bend, was watching the mirror & saw 'white volo estate' who had been right up my tailpipe (err - can I say that ?) thru the 30 (& promptly dissapeared when I hit the derestricted) having a squirmy ABS moment as he came round the bend... was all ready to flip the seatbelt & dive into the footwell to avoid getting punted into the tractor & mashed by the hoe.. thankfully there was nothing coming the other way at the time so he managed to get into the other lane & stop about two foot into the boot.

Cool

Here in germany it is common practice (actually it is taught in the driving schools) to immediately hit the hazzard lights. You then instantly know that the autobahn traffic is either stopped or very close to being stopped and prevents many horrible accidents. Yesterday I traveled back from Vienna to Munich. Cruising casually back at 210kph in the left lane, and about a km ahead 3 lanes of blinking cars - big traffic jam, but due to this system there were no accidents as people could see there was an upcoming problem.

Do they not do this in the UK then??

Some people will hit the hazards to warn of rapidly backing up traffic over here - I certainly do.

Just deviating from the topic ever so slightly, Many newer cars are now coming standard with hazard warning flash under heavy braking. Certainly the new Pug 307 etc

I'm not so sure about the hazzard light thingy....If I see a car on the motorway or road with hazzards on I assume they have broken down and take avasive action to go around them........

A pug ran into the back of me on the M60 in January, 4 repairs later by 2 garages and it still aint right.......damm that pug

bit off topic but anyhoo...
a car stopped dead infront of me the other day using his ABS,
He was on the "grippy" tarmac they put near junctions so stopped pretty much instantly,
I however was'nt on grippy tarmac and don't have ABS ( gotta type RA )
thankfuly I was a quite a way behind, but took 2 full lockups before eventualy stopping with 10ft to spare.

Just highlighted to me one of the drawbacks with that grippy tarmac that I'd have never of thought of.

on the plus side it is excellent for doing 0-60 timings :-)
poor poor clutch :-(
