Don't use any boost for first 15 minutes.
Don't use more than 4000RPM
Don't labour the engine..ie don't try accelerating in top gear with 2000rpm dialled in.
Don't cruise at a constant speed/constant rpm for long periods...driving from London to Glasgow and back again at a constant 70 mph is not recomended.
DO vary the revs.
Do use all the revs between 1.5k and 4.0k
Do use super unleaded.
Do try and do as many miles as you can on B roads where using what is available is easiest.
Do smile.
There is also a paragraph in the owners manual covering this.

My advise would be to ignore old fart totally.
I challenge anyone to drive an STI under 4000 revs and to not be idling the engine.
I would run in as follows.
Use your common sense and dont OVER rev the engine for the first say 250 miles and use the gearbox a lot. I would say move the 4000 revs to 5000.
Dont punnish the brakes for at least 100 miles.
After youve done say 300 miles increase the revs to say 5500.
After say 700 miles increase the revs to say 6000 and possibly 6500 but no redline.
Have the first service done and increase the revs to the 7000 and enjoy.
IMHO if you run in like most plebs under 4000 for the first 1000 miles have it serviced then death it you are far worse off.
It has always worked for me.

Not dissing you may old mate.
Just that oficial guidelines are a load of tosh in most cases.Common sense sometimes rules.

My common sense has brought about my decision to follow manufacturers guide lines for running in, have the 1000 mile service, and then NOT let loose straight away, but work the engine progressively for the next few hundred miles.

I think revving it reasonably hard to 4000-4500 in low gears for very short bursts is better for it than any hard and fast rev limit. I did however (mostly) stick to 4000 rpm when running mine in though with the above as the caveat . The important things are to not let it get too hot, not to EVER let it labour at low revs and to vary the revs.

Adam none that I can be directly resonsable for.
All the P1 claims were down to Manufacturers neglegence(cant spell)
STI claim was also down to a faulty part and a dealers ignorance with normal unleaded fuel!!!
I have run in many cars and never had a problem
Indeed my first M3 was basically never run in and was fine.
£ bikes have never been run in pulled 1000`s of wheelies and been fine.
Car engines are pretty much bench run in these days. Its gearboxes that require mor running in.
Still what do I know heh

Arron,
Car engines are pretty much bench run in these days.
I hear this from time to time and I still don't really believe it. How do you know? Does anybody out there really know if this is true or just a modern fallacy?
