Unhappy

Had the PPP fitted to my STi7 yesterday. Expected alot after all the positive comments on this forum. Initial impressions were that of disappointment. Nice sound from the exhaust but the engine did not pull much more than before. The expected higher torque at lower revs was lacking. However as the journey home continued there were moments when the true potential of the PPP could be felt. This occurred particularly in lower gears (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and especially on pulling away from standing. When it worked well there was a very distinctive rasping induction roar from 3000 revs and mind-blowing power.

This surge of power was not however present all the time - sometimes the power of the engine seemed unchanged compared to before the PPP fit. In fact this is the case about two thirds of the time.

I spoke to the dealer today who will take the car back to check it over.

How should the PPP behave - does the noise describe above occur in all gears? Mine only makes the induction noise in lower gears.

Something is obviously wrong - feels like the correct boost levels are only been reached some of the time.

Any thoughts?

D.

DJB,

2 things; do a search on PPP and you should get loads of info. 2nd, post this in Drivetrain and you might get a better response.

PPP doesn't sound right, however I am no expert.

Cheers

DJb,
Sorry but couldn't find any post from mike saying EucTek for latter STi7's PPP and last time I spoke to him he said "No chance"
My STi7 PPP goes like a train one day next day like a Bus strange MY94-03, 22B's,Type R's, Type RA's, P1's MY03 STi's Non and PPP'd versions do it on rolling roads, and get favourable / expected readings all except the MY02 STi7 PPP really suffers but yet does it on the Road, sometimes Exhaust a lot blackier since the Fuel Pump fitted so may have been running lean !!!!!!!!!!! but still gets the days it DOES it and days it DON'T the inconsistancy is getting me down

Big Goon,
I prefer my STi7 with PPP than without but would have way prefered EcuTeK than Piggyback. I'll pay the difference ;p to get rid of the cr4p piggyback.

I don't know if this is related but my ppp kit for the wrx MY02 did a similar thing. I found that sticking with esso super all but removed the problem. Still bloody annoying though.

Had my STi7 PPP'd last November and have not looked back. - Bags more torque all over the place - especially noticable on the drive back to Poole from Pro-Drive Warwick as I was not having to change down to 5th to get past traffic like I was having to on the journey up to there.

The result is a car that is now far more free revving across range and is much quicker in any situation.

My cars performance is very consistant and does not suffer from good or bad days.

A pal drove the car last night who has a 996 Porsche and at the first chance he had to put his foot down he was amazed and said it felt noticably quicker and of course handled far far better round the twisties. Very satisfied and would not revert back to std.

Final note ~ As Pro-drive devised the package I thought it was best to be fitted by them as they are the experts and have a full understanding of what the final results should be.

Regards

Djb,
If this is correct then new STi7 PPP'd cars can have a PS3 thingy's read boost pressure they are unable to on Piggyback ones IIRC.

D,
Its a SECS monitor PSI3 shows fault codes and most of the readings from the ECU but I didn't buy one because it couldn't show boost pressure when PPP was fitted, on STD Sti7 it would.

Question

Tony,

Does that apply to 02 WRXs (non-STi) as well - for future reference if I get PPP / SECS?

Thanks

Thanks for that - I'm not ready to get PPP just yet but am prefering a set of Defis at the mo so I can have an analogue readout rather than watching a blur of figures...

I like the features of the SECS unit but not the ergonomics (PS I know you can get bar graph readouts but it's not the same IMO )

Yes. The MY01/02 WRX and STi PPP's all "fool" the ECU with regards to the Boost so the Boost figure you see from the ECU will not be the true Boost value. A guage will measure the pressure in the manifold itself so will report the true figure.

The EcuTek based PPP of the MY03 STi 8 doesn't work like this so the reported Boost figure is "true". The EcuTek based PPP is now also aparently being fitted to the MY02 STi 7 as well

I had my STi7 PPP'd last week.

How would I know if I have the new Ecutek ECU or just a piggy back chip fitted ?

Any visual signs ?

I'd like to think I have the new solution.....

Mark,
It's the same ECU one has a Daughter board soldered in it the other is Programmed by Prodrive using 'EcuTek' Software IIRC

...and if you have just had it fitted, it should be the EcuTek remap based one...
