Can any one tell me why the Scooby owners manual explicity states that they should not be used for towing.

Does it damage the diff/turbo or something???

( or is it it can't be towed?)

My neighbour regularly tows either his wee yacht, his jetski or his small caravan in his 5dr scoob turbo. Infact is it not a dealer fit option for the towbar? I'm pretty sure it was when we got ours back in 99.

It's the latter, should not be towed. Subaru's are excellent for towing

IIRC the manual states that an MY98 wagon has a towing limit of 980kg.
Hope that helps

I've towed with a 99MY no problems.

IM said that the P1 should not be used for towing, but I would guess that was for type approval reasons, and not the cars inability to do it.

A scooby should NEVER be used to tow a caravan

No car should be used to tow a caravan

All caravans should be carefully pushed by Challenger tanks

I used to tow a caravan and was a member of the Caravan Club

As a Impreza driver as well I can see how anoying it is to see a massive caravan with a 1.8 D Mondeo towing it - totally out of order!

However I towed with a 3.0 TD Isuzu Trooper, and could easly cruise at 90mph +

So

Tut tut ..... 30mph above the max legal limit for towing.... I am an officer of the law and I will be round to feel your collar shortly.....

Although Trooper TD at 90mph - you probably couldn't afford the fine anyway so what would be the point (we used to have a SWB one of these and 22mpg at best)

As STIVII_Otou-san said they should not be towed with the front wheels in the air but i cant find where it says you cant use a Subaru for towing.

Took a mate of mine for a spin, who also has a caravan and I had to spend 2 hours in the pub that night convincing him that an RA maybe not be much good for towing and may rip the front off his new caravan . Never towed anything in my life except reps on the motorway who wanted to get past in a line of traffic

you can tow things upto about a ton, no problem. You can be towed, provided all 4 wheels are on the road. You don't want to be towed if either the front or rear axle lifted, as the AA and RAC do. Caused the centre diff to die.

Escort Cossies are good for towing caravans and I think should have been the tow car of the year 2002 :

It's not a single caravan moving slowly that is the problem...it's inconsiderate b@stard no.1 towing caravan at 42.1mph that tries to overtake inconsiderate b@stard no.2 towing caravan at 42.0mph on the only 3 miles of dual carriageway (uphill) within 30 miles...then not making it, and pulling back in to sit 2 feet behind t0sser no.1 (who is himself two feet behind some other t0sser towing an effin' caravan) making any kind of overtaking manoever absolutely impossible.

We taught the kids to say "Get off the Road" every time they see a caravan.

Should be banned from the road other than between midnight and 5am
