Unhappy

On my way home tonight in my P1, I pull out to overtake a car on the motorway. Not particularly pushing it but not too slow either.

Anyway, halfway through the overtaking, all warning lights appear and all power goes. Not too sure what the problem is but managed to limp home, everytime I went over 3k revs the engine cut out. Any ideas out there is Scooby Land. I plan to take it to Subaru in the morning.

Sounds like the MAF sensor to me.

My P1 did exactly the same when I was overtaking something in Wolverhampton. After reassurance from my dealer, I managed to drive the 80+ miles home.

When the engine's idling, do the revs vary as if it's hunting for the right level?

if it limped home I dont think the engine can have gone pop..

You dont say if "there was a lot of crashing and banging from under the bonnet and plumes of blue/white smoke out the back and know its knocking like a hammer drill"..

If its just "stopped" then it might be ECU related?

Dont know really, but Im interested now!

Josh L,

EXACTLY THAT!!! Not shouting just pleased someone might know what the problem is. It seams like it tries to cut out and then the revs come back. On idle its up and down like a yo-yo.

How long did it take to sort out? and what is likely to cause the problem? The car is pretty standard.

if the scooby goes into limp mode it will jerk alot, and revs go up n down.

yea more than likely it will be a sensor of some kind.

Mine happened once i removed the exhaust temp sensor (i think) in the up-pipe. had it unplugged then i plugged it back in.

But hope you sort it out mate.

When my MAF went, this is exactly what it felt/sounded/acted like.

It doesn't sound like your engines gone - you'd really know about it!

Lets hope so, I thought it was the Turbo originaly. Hopefully not, its still in warranty so there shouldn't be too many problems.

If it is the MAF You can buy just the sensor part so if its not under warranty still, dont get ripped off by them...

Oakers,

New MAF sensor under warranty, no problem. Unfortunately, my replacement sensor was a few days, but it's surprisingly easy to get used to.

Sleep well, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Oaker,
Don't forget if you have a non OEM air filter your MAF sensor will not be covered by Warranty.
