phil h,
i spoke to Ian Wakeman on friday, mentioned SIDC had to give him the full name, he said i could have the rac price (10% off the hardware price, it dos'nt apply to the service part).

I did'nt now about the backup battery problem, i'll have to call them and check it out.

I'm seriously considering RAC TrackStar for my MY2000 which is due for arrival from Holland in the next few weeks. I've taken a look at previous threads and found out some interesting information from potential dealer fitters. I'd welcome clarification of any of these points if people know more. Also experience of usage of the system.

Firstly, that the current TrackStar unit doesn't provide battery backup. This seems a bit of an oversight to me which I was told TODAY by the RAC they are dealing with - not sure what it means for those with the system already. So if your car is lifted on to a low-loader and the battery disconnected thats it....

Secondly, previous threads had led me to believe that a discount for SIDC members was available - this was denied by the RAC today even though I mentioned the name 'Ian Wakeman' as indicated in the previous thread. Apparently the only discount available is through UK Subaru - something linked to the P1 I guess - I don't think your approved Subaru dealer is offering this service at a discount (yet).

Anyone know anymore?

The discounted price is available to RAC Members or members of an affiliated organisation, I believe.

Because the SIDC is affiliated to the RACMSA members can get the discount. I dealed with Ian and quoted the SIDC. When the order forms come through you fill out the one for RAC Members.

Dave.

The P1 **WILL** have the Battery backup fitted as standard.

Although up till now it has'nt been standard before, which is crap, for the reasons already stated.

Question

Dr Hu

I don't know your background and therefore this may not be applicable to you. However, as a potential private purchaser of the TrackStar system who only found out from a third party that the system lacked battery backup, the problem I have is when will the battery backup be fitted to ALL systems and why haven't the RAC been up-front about this issue so far.

Surely if we know of this fundamental design error then so do the criminals. What about the systems that have already been installed?

I have just spoken to Trackstar and the battery back-up WILL be fitted to all units currently installed, contact me or Trackstar for time scale (don't want to give it away to the tea leaves do we?)

I mean I had just assumed that it had one

Talking

Paul

But WHO ARE YOU?

Mark

Liked the comment in the RS thread about joining SIDC for the discount! The more "associate" members the better

Folks

Lets try & keep fitting time & other "interesting known facts" to a minimum, eh? Most thieves are not renowned as intelligent, but the system has taught them to read, rite, rithmatic & if we are totally unlucky, sent them on a young offenders rehab course on computers & the internet

Obviously the facts about failures in the system should be made known but it is my experience that "the men in unmarked vans & dark coats" are the first to advise you of any potential problems & run the upgrade. They run a top service & are totally serious about it, but question them first before posting.

Somehow I can't see any new members from my posting
FYI I am PDub on the RS board, and so if there are any new RS owning SIDC members out there it's all my fault
If you actually look at my post on the RS board none of the information I gave was security sensitive,i.e. its all in the Tracker brochure.

It's all a fine balancing act betwwen security risk and genuine problem with a product.

I do get around don't I?

Looking at Steve's post about the recovery of his car, the first thing the gits did was rip out the headlining to see if one of these devices is fitted.
As far as I'm aware they can be hidden anywhere but either they're all put in the roof or they require an ariel up there.
I'd want to know that this simple tactic would not disable the device.

Cool

Actually the Young Offenders in Rochester do enjoy computer classes. Today Rochester, tomorrow "I'll remap the world"!

AlanB,
I'd talk to Trackstar/Tracker about it, replies on here would be counter-productive, or come aong to a meet and talk to people there who have had it fitted.

I know an officially approved Tracker fitter. Trackers are not fitted in the headlining & of course I will not post where they *are* fitted. However, if *I* know where they are fitted - so do (some of) the crims. Obviously the Donington crims weren't of the highest quality in the crim dept - only managing to nick a car that had it's engine running & was unlocked & then got nicked themselves trying to steal it back from the police. (No offence intended to SP)
I do not know where Trackstars are fitted.

Thanks,
I just thought that, as they are transmitters, they must have an ariel and if the roof was the only place the ariel would go it'd be easy to disable.
Sound's like I was, thankfully, wrong!

Wink

They do use an aerial & it's not in the roof.
