VAG 1.8 Turbo engines are now being tuned to 300 - 350 bhp, combine that with the lightness of a Polo or Golf shell & that may explain what you saw.

The scene: 11pm, 2mile stretch of fast damp country road, couple of 100mph+ *very* bumpy straights, about 5 70-90mph corners.
Me: scoob UK my99 275bhp/265lb recent Toyo's + suspension tweeks. Recent owner, but with some past experience of performance cars.
I travel this stretch at least 4 times a day, so know it well. Scoob loves it.
The Story...........
Pootling home, saw a distant car approaching quickly in rear view, so (very immaturely) i slowed down to let him catch to show how the corners should be done. Car caught up, pootled along a bit more, then on the exit of the next corner, banged it down and let her fly, tyres squirming for grip, feeling the next straight suck me round the corner like a giant black hole. Hammered it down straight bouncing off rev limiter before changing up, down again and hammer it out the next corner foot to the floor on exit.
Kept glancing in rear view, but unknown car seemed to be sticking with me well - absolutely *impossible* i thought(done the same stretch in a Golf GTI & BMW mini cooper before, and they are almost flung off the bumps at 30mph less than speeds I was doing).....hmmph... 1st thought was it must be another Scoob. I was edging away fairly well on corner exits, but less so on the straights - after 1.5 miles he was only about 40m behind.
Finally came into village and slowed to 30mph - car turned off just a few 100yrds later. Keenly looking in the rear view mirror for what it was. It was dark, so I could'nt be sure, but it appeared to be an early Polo or Golf, definately a hatch with a few years on it, and looking fairly standard.
Can this be so, even power aside considering the bumpy & damp surface???
Ironically, experience left me very pleased as the Scoob behaved so impeccably at silly speeds, just a little perplexed with my sparring partner.
Conclusions:
Must have been a drunk racing driver in a heavily modded car with NOS, and the luck of the gods he didn't end up in the ditch.

Well as NOS is illegal to use on the public highway i doubt it was that but it could have been a VR6 converted polo giving it mucho grippo on the front end but apart from that your tyres could still be rubbing in (doubt it though) so yup, a modified car by all standards afaik......

The road he went down is a dead-end estate, as it's only round the corner, I'll have a peek tomorrow, to see if I can shed some light.
It's probably IS a Starlet/Justy, and I'll be gutted.
I'm often sceptical about street sparring outcomes as I have healthy self-presevation - the quicker car is often the one being driven by the owner with bigger *****. But he was keeping up on the straights for gawds sake!!

I'd guess:
Integrale Evo (Visit Optician)
GTiR (Visit Optician)
Mk 3 Golf VR6 (Visit Self Service Spectacles Stand at Tesco)
Mk 2 Golf G60/VR6 (Ur safe!!)
There's a few nutz Golfs/Polos around with things like S/C'd VR6's and Twin engine's, but I don't think they're actually used much! Lol.

It's very difficult to shake a fully committed driver on twisty roads, irrespective of what's being driven.
Like you say, it usually comes down to the size of your cohones

too true, i've had a similar run in with a few saxos, i'm driving fast but up to a point of not being dangerous to me or anyone else, these guys are probably redlining in every gear and sliding dangerously around each corner, just give it time and they'll find thier way into a ditch sooner or later which if you ask me is the best place for them!

I have to say I find your experience quite funny Walton. Its a real "squelcher" when something like that happens. I have had a similar experience, not while I have had my Scoob, but with a pretty hot car. Certainly makes you wonder a bit! I bet he has posted all about it on another forum somwhere.

My astra's been fitted with Nitrous since 2000. Passed every MOT since then.
Nitrous is road leagal on cars. Not so road legal on bikes.

some funny comments on this thread
'Must have been a drunk racing driver in a heavily modded car with NOS, and the luck of the gods he didn't end up in the ditch.'
Why? just cos it wasnt a scoob? just could have been a better driver?
'the quicker car is often the one being driven by the owner with bigger *****. But he was keeping up on the straights for gawds sake!! '
the quicker car could be driven by a better driver perhaps?
'Thought Scoobs were unbeatable on the wet bumpy twistie's There goes another myth!'
No car is unbeatable on the twisties, thats probably why so many of em get smashed up ?
'these guys are probably redlining in every gear and sliding dangerously around each corner, just give it time and they'll find thier way into a ditch sooner or later which if you ask me is the best place for them! '
How do you know they are, again they may just be a better driver
Scoobs that think they can beat anything usually are the ones that end up in a ditch

I was following a Renault 19 16v one day, think I had the RB5 then.
I thought he was going quite well,as I did have to try a little to keep up, til he ended up in the ditch after leaving the road and hitting a lampost.

I am the first to admit he could have been a better driver (OR have bigger *****). I myself have only had the joys of Scoob ownership for a few weeks also.
But surely driver skill is negligable in a straight line, where I couldn't put any space on him.

I wouldn't worry about it. Anyway can loose in the twisties to any other car. I really struggled to get past a Citreon Berlingo van once when I had the VTS. The guy was nuts and was sliding around all over the place.
