About to place an order on the new STi8, but also like the looks of the Evo quite a bit. I've always thought that Subaru has a better reputation for being reliable than Mitsubishi does.

Anyone have any personal experiences of a Scoob vs. an Evo??

I would say they are about the same. Evo's have been known to warp brake discs every few 1000 miles for example. Since they are about the same, it's dealer backup and parts availablity that becomes a more important factor. In most cases Subaru provides a better dealer network capable of servicing and repairing the car. If I recall there are only a few Mitsubishi dealers who know about Evo's(At the moment).

What about tranny problems. I've read the Evo has a tough as nails box whereas the Scoobs can be a little on the "softer" side.

Older scoobs were known to have gearbox issues, not heard of many newer ones giving up. Of course full on drag strip starts will wear things out a lot quicker and cause things to break more frequently.

I have owened an evo 5 for 3 years and i have only had one problem and that was the speedo converter which sometimes failed to work cost me £85 to replace.
As with these kind of cars and joining forums you suddenly get the tuning bug which can get out off hand really quickly and cost you a fortune.
But i think it is a reliable car i drive mine on a daily basis.
Evo's have a small petrol tank which can be a pain.
As to the scooby will have to let you know as i pick one up tomorrow.

I have had 2 evo 6 and on my 3rd impreza and have found the scooby to be a much stronger car! The gearbox on the evo is crap! If you change the gear box oil every 3500 miles you might get a few thousand miles more before the bills start to get silly!Rear diff is a bit weak if not serviced properly too!The Evo is still a stunning car though and if i could afford the service cost i would still have one.
