I bought my MY98 UK Turbo with 75K miles on the clock. It had one previous owner and I knew the guy went up and down the motorway so wasnt bothered about the mileage.

After becoming a SN member it took all of a few hours to start developing a mods wish list.

I have a SS centre section plus b/box and am hoping to get the downpipe in a few weeks. What I am wondering though is whether it is worth changing anything else on this car or not at this mileage (79K)?

The other thing is performance mods encourage <cough>, spritited driving (another SN (tm)?). Should I be thinking that spending money on mods isnt realy a great idea anyway because I should not be driving a car with this mileage hard?

Thougths please...

Cheers

Matt

37 views and not a single comment?!

Maybe if I had said I was doing 60mph in a 30mph limit, or lost it due to "fuel surge", or perhaps I raced a xxx and it was pants etc., I'd get a response

Come on. Someone must have an opinion....

Ive seen cars with over 100k on the clock that have been moded to well over 300bhp.
If you dont go mad then there shouldnt be any probems.
At the end of the day its up to you...how long do you want to keep the car and do you feel it needs more power ?
If its still got 2 pots it might be a good idea to think of a brake upgrade first.

Thanks Scooby Bloo. That's the kind of reply I was looking for.

I expect to be keeping my car for another 12-18 months. Usually I start to think about changing a car when it gets to about 80k. With the Scoobs having a good rep for high mileage reliability I was interested to hear other peoples experiences of continuing to drive the car hard at high(er) mileage, and with mods as well.

Cheers

Bought mine with 78k, 20 mths later it's done 112k, had a PPP ecu & a decat exhaust fitted, and have a dawes waiting in the wings.
Yes, it does have more creaks & rattles than a lower mileage one, but it is very reliable & has lost c.£2k in value. (the only non service parts it's had are a couple of wheel bearings.) It also allows me to chuckle when I read the "My MY02 has lost me £12k in 6 months threads" because you could have bought two of mine for that !!! Excellent VFM if you ask me - keep it unless you like shedding cash !!!!!!

Cheers Dunk.

Out of interest, are you planning to drive yours till it dies, or would you try and sell it on?

The choice is:
1) Flog it & spend double on exactly the same car with fewer miles.
2) Keep it & get an E30 M3 to have as an everyday alternative.

It's not difficult is it ?

Mine's 4 years old (this Jan), with 16-17k on it from new.
I'm going to mod it until the law of diminishing returns applies, then see how long it lasts. If it outlasts this crappy economy and job uncertainty, I'll be happy.

Bought mine with 60k on the clock UK MY97. At 65k I put Magnex Backbox & decat Centre, ITG Filter, VTA dump valve and Dawes device RR's at 238 at PowerStation. I have since put a decat downpipe on it (5k miles ago). The mileage is now 75k and it runs very well (completely different car to standard).

Most of my driving is motorway, but I do enjoy the spirited sort of driving during the 15 miles of country lanes to get back home.

I have got the AFR Meter and Boost Gauge fitted, and am just ordering a Knocklink.

I recon that you would have to be careful about mods. If you totted it all up you could be looking at £s per mile to run all told, so you'd just as well buy a Porsche!

Cool

Bought my UK98 @9K miles and up to 65K miles spent about £5K on bits so it was ppp, decat exhaust, K&N filter and ran 21-22 psi peak boost (PPP dropped it to about 14psi at 6.5K revs and it gave 278 BHP and 268ft-lbs and drove well. (rest of money spent on brakes, springs, rims etc).
Then spent a lot on engine rebuild/upgrade, transmission upgrades.
(The old pistons etc were fine in spite of the gloom merchants saying 22psi would melt pistons, blow up etc etc !! - just cos mine didn't doesn't mean yours won't however !)

Decide how long you are going to keep it cos you wont get much back on the money you spend on mods.
I decided to spend money on this one rather than buy a newer version that still needed modding.

Cool

Mines a UK 98 Turbo too. 43K on when I bought it 2 years ago, 70K Last December - decided to start mod'ing....

I'll be keeping it for another 2 years or so, and now I've modded it, I'm not keen to sell anyhow !

Eibachs, 4pot brakes, grp N discs, braided lines, Ferodo 2500 pads, TSL Backbox, De-cat centre and de-cat Downpipe, ITG Panel Filter, better headlamp bulbs (PIAA Ultras)... Keep it serviced, and replace parts when needed and it runs sweet as a nut (!?)

Good Luck

Mark

PS _ You WILL NOT REGRET IT !!!

Dunk -- your advice on wheel bearings on this thread would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Carl -- not yet a member of the 100k club but working on it (85k).

'oh moan moan, if you spend loads on mods, ya could have bought a porsche'......what a load of toss,,,...if we all saved the money we would have spent making us happy,....(cars, mods, and sh it) we;d all be millionaires,...but we wouldnt be happy,....

i have a 4x4 saph cos, and have just spent close to 4k making it a reliable 350, using brand new block new pistons, pretty much new everything, and i cant wait for it to be mapped and finished to get it on the road,....

get modding and dont be a girl

Mod away, but why spend big money on modding if you're only going to keep the car a year or so?

Modding can also mean making the care more reliable by using new parts and by using uprated parts which can stand up to the increased power.

I have a modded Cossie and a completely mad Peugeot 205(stripped out, reshelled, Mi16 engine, Alpha-Weber Throttle Bodies/Engine Management/Custom Mapping, plus LOTS more = 700kg/220bhp) - I've spent almost as much on the 205 as it would cost to buy as brand new Focus RS.

If you're the one spending big money on modding and doing it sensibly, then keep the car for a while, or you'll be throwing money away.

Good luck and enjoy it, whatever you do

Cheers

STi 2 wagon.
90K
£3000 on brakes, tyres and 350ftlbs clutch/balanced lightend lateral performance fly wheel.

Car beats new M3 etc (well in the wet)

I will run it into the ground as now its value would buy nothing in its place so why sell it?

Cheap cars are less stressful than my 22B any day

Mines a MY00 now got 78k on, mines modded, decat centre section, Scorpion B/B, Dawes Device and the usual safety gauges and meters and a JR panel filter. Just been rolling roaded at 260 BHP @ 6450 rpm and 242lb/ft @ 3750rpm

And YES i sometimes drive it hard, normally in the right places.
See my thread 63 mph in a 30mph zone

The car has full main dealer service history and runs as sweet as a nut.

When I bought mine I heard about 2 scoobies that were still running at 160k with only standard servicing + clutches. So, so long as you don't go silly with massive boost I don't see there being a problem.

My UK MY99 now has 63k on it, 50k of those with a full decat. I was looking at changing but have decided that rather than waste money on a newer car which I don't know, and which isn't that much better than mine. I'll put some money into mods.

After that its just going to be things like clutch and bearings that will need attention as my mates MY93WRX still looks good and thats 10 years old.

DaveW.
