95/97 RON? for a Sport?
#1
I have trawelled using search thorugh all the posts about which grade petrol to use. I am picking up an MY98 AUTO sportwagon tomorrow and I know that it is going to have an empty tank. When I get to the petrol station what do I need to put in it?
NUL or SUL?
Which gives best MPG, and which will give the most power/smoothness?
Will optimax have any effect? You have mentioned that it contains cleaning aditives, whould that benifit the engine?
I am only intrested in the relavance to a sport, not a turbo, and it is a uk car not an import.
Let me know?

I only run mine with Optimax
Used to use regular 95 RON, but the car definately pulls much smoother on Optimax - performance all in the head
mpg much of a muchness - more down to your right foot that the grade of petrol...

We used to have a Sport. Only used Optimax or SUL. Couldn't see any difference in mpg. Seemed to run smooth etc but only really noticed it when putting normal 95 unleaded in once; when pulling up a hill (not labouring) we had a load of pinking so the ECU must make alterations accordingly.

i ran my sport on 95 with no problem. There was a noticeable increase in smoothness with 97, which I treated it to once in a while (every 3rd or 4th tank) and I did get another 20 or so miles out before the low fuel light came on, so worth the extra.
Also, higher octane is always better for your engine in the long run.

Think it was 81 pence a litre? (Warick services)
So 35 divided by 0.81 = 43 litres
so I had 2 litres to spare?
When I got in and started it the petrol needle did not move at all.

the needle stays set even when the ignition turned off in scoobs.
you'll notice it's on full (or whatever) when you next get in the car.
If you've got the revised interior, you ought to also have a low petrol warning light, but I'm not sure they put this on sports.
Pre-98, we all have to guess - arrow pointing through the E == keep fingers crossed you can stop somewhere!
