How does the focus rs compare to an impreza?

Hi
Just wondering went in a focus rs the other day. very quick, how does it compare to an impreza?. Obviously slower I spose. Just wish my diesel focus company car was as quick.

yep, depends....
If its the standard UK model, the focus is faster.
If its the standard Jap model, the focus is slower.
plus, there are too many variants to consider.
If its a UK STI with the ppp the focus is gonna be made to look very silly.
If its a Jap TypeR or RA, then the focus will be made to look very very silly.

Sat watching one at Santa Pod the other day. Lots of young lads sat round going ooohhh Focus RS 220bhp, this should be quick! It wasn't. It took a good couple of seconds to get the thing moving without the wheels spinning! (note to Ford....needs 4 wheel drive).

In today's Autocar, they choose it over the new Impreza and say
I'm sure you'll get lots of replies slagging the RS but remember that not many people have actually driven one......
"Divides opinion like euro discussions at Tory/Labour party conferences. Finally toppled the Impreza in a group test last year and holds off the new one for thrills, but some drivers will find it asks too much"

Drag strips are for poofs!
Lap times round a track is the only important criterea for me.
and I am led to believe a FRS does very well indeed.

Oh thanks for that! I didn't realise that was what made a car.....
Swap Wanted: MY99 scooby with Tek2.5, full ss decat, sti v intercooler and dawes for any Caterham, westfield or elise
With the money I've spend modding my scooby I could have modded my saxo to be quicker round a track! Get them on a normal road......
Focus RS is a great car I'm sure but not my cup of tea, too much power at the wrong end

I am not interested in how good a road car it may be, I can use another car for that, and I am willing to put up with few traits to have a quick track car. Or to be more honest a car that can get me to the ring, do 25 laps and back home again.
People buy scoobs as cars that are great round corners and what great road cars they are, then go and compare cars on a drag strip??? whats all that about???

No idea mate! I want to 1/4 mile my car so I know what is capable of but I won't keep going unless I make further changes. If I wanted a track car I'd get a track car! I want a fast road car hence I have the scooby

Top Gear did a shot-out between the RS, the WRX and Civic Type-R around their test track.
1st - Focus RS
2nd - Civic Type-R
3rd - Impreza WRX

Yeah but drive down the street in any of the cars mentioned in this thread and see which makes people stop, turn and look (and not just because of the great exhaust note). I'm only into my second month of Scooby ownership and I love it.
There is something special about owning and driving an Impreza which, for me, takes it beyond what a shopping trolley (Focus?) could offer me - that would be great for nipping down to Asda but I wanted four doors, great engine, and a chassis which can cope with a and b road dashes and 220+ BHP. And I believe that ain't the Focus RS or Civic Type R.
All my opinions of course, and I've not driven the Focus (although I have driven a Civic R, nice but not for me).

wrx may have came last, but as i recall it was the car chosen by the presenter to go home in. In any case its only a wrx, thats bottom of the range compared to fords current top of the range. May be different when the cosworth comes out, if it ever will.

don't know about anyone else but after seeing a couple of rs focus perform i think all the press and pre launch previews have been a bit biased, and personally would take an impreza or ctr before one..all the research has gone into a car putting to much power up front the car is out of date as it is launched..i would happily race a focus head to head in a uk impreza and despite any test results find it hard to belive that a front wheel drive turbo charged ford will beat a four wheel drive turbo IMPREZA WHETHER UK OR IMPORT ,car be it a track, length of road, or as seen this weekend a drag strip.perhaps this is why there was a distinct lack of rs focus' available to try before you buy???it would not be the first time a car was lets say hyped up prior to launch??a bitter disapointment to me to be quite frank and i love all the fast fords!!!BY THE WAY ANYBODY WANT TO BUY A DEPOSIT FOR A FOCUS?????JUST WANT MY MONEY BACK NO PROFIT REQUIRED!!!!MAIL ME???
IN ANSWER TO THE TOPIC...SCOOB/EVO EVERY TIME GIVEN A CHOICE.....

the comparison of 220bhp front wheel drive ve 220 bhp four wheel drive only one winner...how do you arrive at that conclusion???is that based on an ideal weather???obviously a difference of opinion which is what its all about???!!
image doctor if the focus is what you like then fine...i am just saying that i feel it falls short and if it was my cash i would buy a impreza/evo before one every time..however if you want a focus and it is what you want then great but i think i will pass........i will keep waiting for a p1/evo.

Lets see the comparison on a damp or wet track.... That would be more interesting.
Sadly, on a dry track I would have to agree - 4WD not going to do much for you.
How about a gravel rally stage?

Draco, i meant in terms of "sporting range", im afraid im not counting anything without a turbo.
And since u being pedantic, i might as well be. Wrx top of the range but one? Try uksti, prodrive sti, import wrx and import sti and possibly the s202 if that can be counted

I think 4wd cars must give away at least 10% of their power due to extra diffs

Yeah 4WD on track will always lose to 2WD, that's why the Audi A4 4WD touring cars used to get destroyed all the time off FWD Mondeos and RWD BMWs etc... despite having very similar power and a crippling weight penalty imposed because it's 4WD.
The BTCC must have wanted to emphasise to everyone just how bad AWD really is hence the weight penalty in addition to what is already an inferior package . Funny how there were seldom any cars that could get near when the road was damp/wet and that is on a near perfect tarmac surface! And I might as well add the BTCC banned AWD a few years later to level the playing field.
Moral is... some situations will benefit greatly from AWD, some won't see any real benefit so overall you lose due to extra weight and drivetrain losses. But considering our roads aren't for the most part super-smooth grippy tarmac (not round my part of the country anyway!) and that we do see the odd spot of rain now and then with it being the UK I know what I prefer
PS I do think the Focus RS is a nice looking car having recently seen one in the flesh, but I reckon Ford is way over optimistic of what FWD can do with 215BHP in the real world. Simple case of make-do rather than provide the best tool for the job.
