Mods - Feel free to move to Gen technical just wanted some exposure so if slitting wrists, could get on with it ASAP

MY99 - out of warranty

Nice bill in August for new gearbox along with loads of other odds and sods. Car has been driven hard but FSSH, always warmed up/cooled down blah blah

Spark plugs changed on Saturday to hopefully eradicate flat spot @ 4k revs (in hindsight maybe oil in boost thingy) and then all of a sudden runs like bag of **** , spluttering under 3k revs (feeling like running on 3 cylinders) then pulling relatively normally.

Initially thought an HT lead or plug damaged whilst replacing plugs (varying voltages reading across the leads etc )

Gave in and went into dealers this morning who has just phoned to say that there is no compression in cylinder 3 and will be Thursday before they can open it up

How many members of my family do I need to pimp out to pay bill ?

Can anyone in the know help with any probable causes and rough idea of foreseeable cost

Cheers in advance
Si

had this on my previous car (220gti). both exhaust valves had disintegrated. 1100 quid later and she was back on the road (valves 20 quid each, labour was the killer)....

If it's an engine out job then I doubt it is ever going to be cheap (unfortunately)

As it's now out of warranty have you thought about taking it to one of the non dealer servicing places around Edinburgh ? It might add up to a big saving on the labour and it probably doesn't hurt to get a second opinion

SiPie,

Sorry to hear about your engine. Like others have already mentioned, parts don't seem to be all that expensive if you can find the right contacts. Problem is the labour rate; Dealers must start rubbing their oily hands when they hear this news

Did you have any guages or monitors on your car to give you an idication things were not right?

Stefan

Cheers Ozzy/Blair

I have thought about going non-dealer but I'll be honest and say that although I'm concerned about the money side of things, I'd rather just get it done, the dealer is just up the road.

Sounds a bit sad but all I want is this car to run to it's true abilities and I never expected it to be a cheap holiday when I bought the thing, but it really is taking the p1ss now

It all goes on a visa and it's all just numbers anyway I don't drink/smoke/take drugs anymore (so SiPie = sad get ) so I feel i can at least pay to have the so-called specialists look after it

It's at the dealers and the hassle of getting it towed/moved elsewhere just doesn't appeal

PS Ozzy.... no gauges mate, but mod's were only exhaust mods (d/pipe + b/box) so wasn't too worried .... hindsight's a great thing eh?

Sipie,

If you are looking at big numbers and are taking the car to Nobles remember that they offer a 10% discount (on parts and labour IIRC) to SIDC members.

It might be worth joining up ASAP if you are not already a member. If the costs are going to be as gloomy as predicted then you could save yourself a hundred quid or so.

My 10% has saved me a couple of hundred quid in the time I've owned my Scoob.

Blair

Good point m8...

Was hoping that the SIDC sticker on the window might throw them off the scent

Sure it will be big numbers again...

Cheers

SiPie,

Yeah, isn't hindsight a wonderful thing

Would be interesting to hear what they think caused the failure.

Just tell Nobles that you're a member. My car was plastered in stickers and they never bothered adding the discount.

I just phoned up and asked them if they still did the discount. They did and said just to mention it to them before any work and it'll get deducted from the invoice automatically.

Good luck,
Stefan

Thanks Stefan

The irony being that I found the SIDC sticker and thought it preferable to the AF Noble one

Guess I'll join the SIDC after all

Will let you know what they think caused it on Thursday as I'm pretty interested myself

Cheers
