After reading a few threads on here thought I would take 5 litres of Castrol RS 10W/60 for my 37.5K service.

First garage seems ok with this. Second said they wouldnt even do it cos they only use Shell Helix. In my last service they used BP Viscos Oil so there appears to be no guideline set in the manufacturers service.

What are other peoples opinions on this and has anyone had any problems getting a service done because they wanted to use diff oil to that of a Subaru Dealer?

Its all about the profit I'm afraid. Garages buy the oil in bulk and sell it at a premium, sometimes a huge premium, as we all know when we get the final invoice.

As an idea of the money involved, when working for Mobil I used to buy Mobil 1 for £5.50 per 4 litre pack, against a shop price of £28-30. The difference in price is quite staggering eh..

Oil is one of the few items used in the a service of a car that a franchised dealer doesn't have to buy from one source, i.e. they have to buy their parts from IM group, but are free to find the oil from whoever. As such it is a major profit line for a garage when they service a car, and one that some don't want to give up.

That being the case you know what to do.........

My dealer used Castrol RS 10/60 as standard when they did the first and second services. As you say, there seems to be no uniformity between dealers as to which oil they use.

I've taken Motul 300V 10W50 to my local dealer who has no problems using that for the service

I used to take Mobil1 in for my 200sx and never had a problem with any garage refusing to change it. Usually only took 10 quid from me for the privelage.

mista weava - I asked which oil most used in Drivetrain and Castrol 10W/60 came out as a favourite. I thought something like Silkolene PRO-S 10W/50 would be popular but it seems not even though Scoobysport and TSL sings its praises.

mista w - i checked the invoice and it just says Castrol RS, doesn't specify the viscosity. is there a 10/40 or a 15/40 Castrol RS?

Mr Weeva, your statement is wrong.

10W 60 is fine. Any lower is not ideal, especially 0.

call me paranoid, I've always worried that some mechanic would keep my oil and still use the normal oil the dealership supplies.

Well unless u stand over their shoulder whilst they do it then there isnt much u can do other than change it yourself.

indeed you are right and i am a fool!

after i had written it i realised that 10 is fine and lower is not so suitable.

i think it was the 60 part that threw me momentarily, as i run silkolene 10/50.

could'nt be aresed to change it as had to rush off out!

interesting that lots of peeps like the 10/60 stuff and not the silkolene as recommended by s/sport and tsl? prob get silkolene cheaper trade! pete??

Have no problem supplying my own oil for service. Seeing as my local dealer charges £13 + VAT per litre for the oil I use! This is especially expensive when my car takes nearly 7 litres of the stuff! Turns an oil service into a very expensive exercise, or at least it would if I couldn't supply my own.

Castrol RS 10W60 is great for Scoobs. In fact, it's great for most high performance cars, turbocharged or not. Some people do say that Motul 300V is also excellent, but I've never tried it subjectively.

Yeah the peugeot garage let me provide mobil 1 for my 306 GTI6 (about to turn into MY 2000 on SAT ).

Funny, you trust your garage to put into your car what they charge you for. However, Bassetts Peugeot of Swansea happily told me they were putting Helix into my car, only for the helpful Machanic to leave the dregs of an oil container for me - bloody autoquip cheapy looking stuff ( or is this unbranded helix?).

The urge to put the dog**** in the post was strong!

I phoned my dealer today to book the Scooby in for a service and told them i would be bringing my own oil, the lady on the other end of the phone said she had made a note of the fact, so no problems for me.
I must admit though ive always been worried that my oil wont get used and some cheep stuff will get used instead, then when i come to top up ill end up putting synthetic in with what ever they have used....just paraniod i guess

phoned my local dealer today about my 30k service on an 03 sti and he said it was just shy of £400. he said hes happy for me to take my own oil and if i can get my spark plugs cheaper than theyre £40 odd a set hes happy for me to get em. Just looking for my Power Train booklet now for my filters lol.

sorry to drag up an old thread it was oils i was looking for actually is the motul 300v good for sti's (or is cream better)

From a five litre can shouldn't there still be some left over?? In which case ask for the remainder so you can use it for a top up. This may give you a bit more confidence that they used what you gave them.

Have always supplied own oil and its never been an issue.

I used to use Castrol RS 10/60 but then a series of threads concluded that Silkolene ProS 5/40 was 'better'. Castrol is not true fully synthetic?

Yup, castrol isn't a "true" synthetic, it uses hydrocracked mineral basestock. Silkolene is Esther based (i.e synthetic basestock).

And I would not let a 10w/60 anywhere near my car unless it was seriously modified or hammered round a track. It's just too thick until it gets "really" hot.

James, i did get the remainder of my oil back and put it somewhere safe to use for top ups ...hence i cant find it now but im pretty sure it was motul 300v 10w40.

im not trying to hi-jack this thread, i just didnt see the point in starting a new one for a simple question on this topic...

i put 10w/40 in my wrx import. its standard at the moment so is this oil rating ok or do i need to change it asap??? im planning a full decat exhaust and a remap eventually. i have NO idea (sorry lads and lasses) on this one
