Subtitle : Rodent Cripples STi Type UK !

Today I attended the Aberdeen Winter Social Gathering for SIDC peeps and friends.

Mrs Numptie and I had taken our seats when a couple of the guys came in from the carpark and told me that I'd better go have a look at my car. Apparently there was a considerable amount of steam issuing from the bonnet scoop.

I went out to check it but all seemed well. I guessed I might have driven through a puddle on the way in to the carpark.

After lunch and stuff, we set off home (sorry we couldn't come for the photo call guys - but good job we didn't !). A couple of miles up the road, something was up. The car was up to temperature but the AC was blowing ice cold. Then I noticed the temperature gauge creeping up toward red. We pulled over as soon as it was safe.

I popped the bonnet and had a look. First impression was that the engine bay had been sprayed with coolant and the expansion tank was bone dry.

Closer inspection revealed that several thermo-plastic and polymer components showed definate signs of having been chewed !

See below ...

Note the red rubber boot on the cable.

See the protection cover on the battery positive post.

Check the coolant hose !!!

General view.

I called Subaru Assist and they were there within the hour. I asked for the car to be towed to the nearest dealer because I was nervous of what else might have been damaged.

So, this is what a mouse can do to an Impreza ...

A big thanks to Corpulent Tosser for running Mrs Numptie home, waiting with me and then running me home. Cheers man - I owe you one.

The tow truck driver filled out his form for me to sign. I noticed that in the reason for breakdown section, he'd written; mouse attack.

Anyway, more to come when I get the report.

I'm clearly not very happy about this but ... to inject some humour ... do you think it's anything to do with the fact that I had my PPP fitted a few weeks ago ?

After all, they did remove the standard cat !

Bummer about the car, the damage looks pretty conclusive! I wonder what would cause a mouse/rat/etc to want to chew through the hoses?

Thanks for all your supportive messages guys - NOT !

If I'd posted that the car had been keyed or 'jacked or sniffed around; I'd have had a torrent of sympathy !

I'm joking though, whilst this is a bit inconvenient and likely to cost a fair bit at the end of the day; I can't but help see the funny side.

Cheers,

N

I had the same problem some years ago with my Subaru 1.8DL estate. The friggin mouse was eating the carpets (probaly all the crisps etc in them actually), then started under the bonnet. I put some mouse traps under the bonnet on the spare wheel (where is was kept on the 1.8DL, we are talking 1989 here), and soon caught a sucession of little critters. End of problem.

Some time later, when trying to sell my other car, a landrover SWB HT, I told a prospective buyer that I maintained it "regardless of cost". The buyer asked to look under the bonnet, and there nestles amoungst the injectors was.........a birds nest. He did not buy the car.

Do you want rentokills number?

Exactly the same thing happened to me last September! CEL light detected them as they'd chewed throught the wire to the oil temp sensor! As well as the red cover ontop of the alternator.

The little sods even left food and droppings neer the engine mounts where they'd started to build a nest!

TSL very kindly sorted out the mess for me.

Cheers

You should buy a horse to hunt down the mouse with. Decatting the car was a bad idea.

I guess you could always use a badger or an otter instead of a horse, but the horse is able to see the mice better because it's higher off the ground and can see them scuttling around in the grass.

I know an old scooby who swallowed a rat
I don't know why it swallowed rat
I know an old scooby who swallowed a cat
it swallowed the cat, to catch the rat that knawed and sawed inside her

It died of course...

Makes me glad we have 2 cats
And lots of cats live in the neighbourhood, have to be some sort of "supermouse" that comes round here

Had a similar problem when I lived with my parents, they lived opposite a farm!

You live near fields/open ground??

I'd nipped outside for a *** as the restuarent was non-smoking and noticed *clouds* of steam pouring out of Numptie's STi, from the scoop and the rear lhs of the bonnet. Me and clubby had a further look and when I mentioned it to Numptie, his response "Och, it'll be ok"

Glad to hear that you got home ok.

Sorry...what can I say - we were on a night out, got peckish and your car was just sitting there....

If it's any consolation, it was delicious.

BTW, ... my Moderator friends, I recognise this post has huge muppet potential but it also has a serious side.

Unless it really does get daft, I recommend (would be grateful if) you leave it here.

Cheers,

Great story, hope it doesnt cost too much to fix. I arrived just before Miles came out and there was smoke as well, definetly blue smoke. Thats why I left a space between your car and mine, needed to leave room for the firemen.
I slipped on the ice and nearly landed on my @rse as I sprinted in to tell you. I had one hand on my mobile (hot line Quantum Claims) as I went down.:-)

Numptie - Sorry some rodent decided to eat the car... but it is funny at the same time. Also BTW when I mentioned someone had keyed my car (3 places) four people commented!

IanW - Moderator of the Members Gallery and you can't see all four wheels were off the ground!:rolleyes.
