and larger insurance bills.
The JDM is by some (ok most) measurements the superior weapon, but it isn't just for giggles that the EU version is different.
What is most important for you? What do you want from the car? And are you bothered that you can't have it serviced by Subaru garages, plus having a slightly greater headache come insurance time?
It's an easy question you've asked, but the answer isn't just "that one" without a bit more info

Chiark: when you say 'just for giggles', are you thinking of EU type approval, or something else? As a buyer, I couldn't really care less whether my car is type approved or just passed SVA.
My only concerns over choosing the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) version would be over fuel requirements and availability of parts. I'd love an RA spec C 17", provided that I was sure I could get hold of parts when it inevitably breaks.

More power, allegedly different suspension set-up, allegedly set up for different fuel so uses a different ECU. Superficially, no alarm, stereo that doesn't receive the right FM range in the UK.
For buying, look at iain litchfield, whi have a banner ad. To be honest, Iain can probably talk you through the benefits and disadvantages of going the JDM route as he'll happily sell both JDM and EU spec...

I looked into this when I was placing an order it is for a wrx so may differ slightly to STI comparisons.
JDM
depending on exchange rate can be obtained for a similiar price to the UK list when factoring all the other costs.
JDM is a better spec. UK wrx is 218bhp JDM is 246bhp ??. STI is a simiiar peformance hike but i dont know what it is for certain.
I couldnt get "any" reasonable insurance quotes on a JDM wrx or sti being only 25.
I would find a local(ish) place you are happy to have work done. a lot of the specialist tuners / workshops carry common parts for jdm models.
The wait could be months depending on what boat it is shipped on.
SVA approval easy if it is right first time can turn into a pain in the a$£e.
No OEM warranty
Needs alarm tracker and UK stereo fitted & whatever is needed for SVA.
May need a ECU remap due to fuel differences or additive must be used (dont know if this is true or not).
UK / Euro Parralel.
lesser performance to JDM.
3 year oem warranty.
you can get a Euro import wrx for 16500k depending on exchange rate think about 21000k for a sti.
slightly better insurance tesco's where £750 for me but want a alarm and a tracker fitted. compared to muffled laughs for a JDM quote.
service at a main dealer / or a specialist once out of warranty.
basicly if I had the cash, could get insurance and had the time I would go for a JDM sti (who wouldnt). but because of these factors I have gone for a UK wrx. its your choice
