I am planning to pop over in Spring 03.

Have an issue with cover (tried a post in insurance, but no one seems to be going in there!).

Greenlight seem to suggest it is a road and does not need additional cover, as long as I keep off the racing circuit.

L&V are telling me that anything off the "highway" is a complete no no., but they couldn't seem to tell me whether the ring is a track or road.

Any precedents here or anybody know where to get authorative info on this?

Just dont ask! It will only be a problem if you crash I have heard people also say they crashed on a road between Adenau and Nurburg. [you ain't seen me, right]

It is a grey area, but it IS classed as a public toll road. The following link is a useful resource.

its not a grey area at all.

Under german law it is a public road and is covered on your green card insurance as part of your european road cover.

The only way that can be excluded, is if your policy specifically mentions that section of road, as Theo's does.

The ring is a public road, not a racing track unless it is closed for a private sesion.

I already have a claim at the ring dave. My first trip there my turbo oil return pipe failed and droped oil on the track. A biker crashed on that oil, put himself in hospital, got airlifted by helicopter, totalled his bike. you get the picture?

The police take all your insurance details and pass that to the other party, you dont have any say in the matter. Whenever i get a bill (such as £10K in medical bills), that gets sent to the insurance company.

So yes, i have actual experience of this unfortunately.

Davy, same here. My car had an interesting armco interface, and the insurance did pay out, but consequently sent a private eye to my house for a 2 hour inquiry, and then sent me an addendum to my contract stipulating the Ring would not be covered anymore.

So yes, it is a public road, and unless specifically stated otherwise, normal insurance counts. Normal traffic rules do too, mind.

Question

So can they close it for racing days? How do they control hundreds of loonies going on there?

I watched the CK at the ring and noticed a number of buses but there seemed to be a pit area etc.. John, does Stef ever come on here anymore?

been 'ringing a couple of times in my old Mk2 golf GTI (NO WAY IS MY SCOOB GOING ON THERE!!!!)got to say its great but be careful- folk have a habit of getting caught up in other peoples accidents.
Consider hiring a car (how about a AudiTT from Koln airport!!)or do some slowish laps in the scoob when no one else is around.
If the worse comes to the worse u can get the car removed by the marshals and towed away from the circuit to a better location........
story goes something like this "I was driving on a mountain road in the eiffel region of Germany when......................"- this seems to work a treat!

..why, oh why do people get so worried about the ring?? Yes, I admit, it is a bit daunting but when people like John Felstead and John Reeves are on hand to give advice before trips, it doesnt seem that bad when you're there. Horror stories are just that..yes people die there all the time, but the majority are on bikes, getting "caught up" in other peoples accidents is a risk which "might" happen...

..then again you "might" get hit by a bus...

For my 1st trip I got my insurance company to stipulate that my car was covered for all German highways, including one-way toll roads. The girl on the end of the phone was confused by my request but they did it non the less.

Hope this helps

I agree with Richard. Listen to the advice from John.

We went over for the first time this year and had a great time. I did 3 laps of the ring in an awful time of 13 minutes (compared to the 8 and a bit that it takes John!).

BUT, I had a great time. I'd only had my car for a couple of months and didn't feel i knew it well enough to really blast round, especially as I had to get home somehow.

John's advice to me was to repsect the 'ring and treat it like a country road that you don't know. Follow this, and you will have a good time.

Dave.

P.S. When we turned up, the German Porsche Owners Club had booked it out for the daytime. There were a couple of battered 911's there. Also saw a biker being carried from a car during the evening session. These little reminders make you think...
