keeps failing which means I cant get the car started. Had it looked at by garage who said nothing wrong, now sat at work waiting for subaru assistance for the 4th time in as many weeks.
Anyone else had this problem

Mine keeps doing this, try giving it a sharp tap on something hard, I usually find my knee cap works best. Like you say, nothing up with batteries, just tempremental.
Good luck

When this happens, are you parked anywhere near a Police Station or a Radio mast? Because there is a carpark at the side of the main police station in Blackpool that won't let you lock/unlock your car with the remote due to the radio waves from the police station mast. Ady.

I knocked the fob and it still dont work, nowhere near any masts or police station but outside a hospital (????). I really feel like dumping the f$cking car at the garage and just walking away!!!

Take it to dealer and tell them you have interference and for them to change the transponder (I think). Sounds like you are getting interference from somewhere. Is it still under warranty? Mine was changed free of charge when something nearby changed radio frequencies. Killed mine completely at home, worked fine at the garage.
If needs be, drive them to where it has the problem and show them.

Had this problem with my MY01 WRX. Fob wouldn't work anywhere within 1/4 mile of any police station, radio mast or hospital. A friend reckoned it was cos the alarm detected microwave scatter from these sites, thought it was being scanned and so shut down. Had to open door with key, set off alarm and reactivate with keypad in dash. Dealer said couldn't do anything about it..
Now got STI7 and it's never happened since.. was a real pain (and embarrassment!)

It's a known problem (fixable under warrantee) for the MY99/00 cars, or any car with the Subaru/Sigma alarm.
It's to do with the alarm box not being shielded (against RF and police frequencies etc) - Mine's booked in on Friday to have the box changed
You can still get into the car (using the key - old-fashioned concept, I know ), and type in your immobiliser code.....
Hope this helps

Mine aswell, Ive always found that keeping calm, walking around the car, (not going into the boot for my sledge hammer) and pointing it at different angles always works eventually. It usually works just as the missus starts, "you will buy expensive cars yapyapyapyapandwhilewereonthesubjectyapyapyap"!

Thanks for responses, will contcat the garage and get the box changed under warranty!!!. The night does get worse, I leave the car with the recovery person as I had to get to a restaurant for a works meal. Get home, 10 minutes later I find that its been lifted by front wheels on a tow truck. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I did not think that you shoud do this with a 4 wheel drive car (difs??). If this is the case what sort of damage, if any can I now expect!!!!!?????

Yep - have the same problem on my MY00.
I've parked in the same car park 3 times, and the transmitter has filed to work on each of these occasions. I now never go anywhere near the car park!
Blinking annoying though, particuarly when the dealer keeps saying 'no fault found' like as if I'd make it up for fun!

I have the same problem when I fill up at a local BP petrol station!!! Needless to say I don't go there now. I eneded up pushing the car from beside the pump into a parking space. Very embarrassing

I had this outside a hypermarket in Antibes in the south of France, neither my usual or spare 'blippers' would work. Not only could I not open the car, I couldn't lock it either! Eventually found that it worked if I held the blipper in front of the windscreen.
