Having spent a hectic weekend with my 10yr old boy(3hrs of harry potter) and all day sunday @ our local skate park is a challenge in its self!
As per usuall we set of for the hour journey from Ashford to Eastbourne.I always try and leave after 7pm as the roads seem to be a bit quieter..
All was well, said my cheerios and parted with the pocket money!
For those of you that are familiar with the area these are some fantastic back roads from Hastings to Rye via Udimore with some tight twisting corners and the odd straight!!
Through a series of bends I am without warning faced with a dustbin in the middle of my side of the road!! Yep.. a massive crash, and near heart failiure my nightmare began, after stopping and praying please please please, I come to terms the damage caused........
N/s headlight cluster smashed to pieces
Front bumper
splitter
N/S wing
Bonnet
Screen cracked

Im totally devastated!!
Why do people have to put dustbins out the night before???//

Pics to follow!!

So you were driving faster than was safe for the road you could see in front?
I'm assuming it didn't roll off the pavemnt at the last minute.
Sorry for the lack of sympathy, but it could have been a lot worse - a tractor stopped in the road for instance. Think yourself lucky you got off relatively lightly this time.
I'm not in the hippy "speed kills" brigade, but you should be able to see far enough ahead so you can stop in the distance you can see. Or be prepared to take the consequences...

mungo is spot on the road is not a racetrack if you must (push it)make sure the road ahead is clear..it could easily have been a person in the middle of that road

7pm, its dark and the dustbin is green and difficult to see?

Can sympathise with both sides of this, thank goodness it wasn't a child or some other living thing though.

It maybe true that being able to stop in the distance you see or can reasonably expect to be clear takes some of the fun out of driving in the twisties you can't argue with it from a safety point of view.

Hope you get your baby fixed asap.

Should you consider mentioning the bin to your insurers? Not sure....

Get over ya self Mungo. If you drove round every where slow enough to allow for a weelie bin round the corner your speedo would be up and down like a yo yo between the straights and the twisties. I don't believe for a moment you drive like you have Kangeroo juice in the petrol tank.
Don't get me wrong, i don't drive like an idiot, but i'm sure if there was a bin just around the corner on many of the corners i take, the chances are that i would either hit it or have a heavy middle peddle moment.
Don't forget that your average wheelie bin is either black or green, which are not the best colours to be seen at night.

Why do people have to put dustbins out the night before???
Because it's a PITA to do it at 6am in the morning before I go to work?

lol @ brun - i don't think anyone on scoobynet or indeed any car driver can lay claim to driving everywhere at the speed limits or being able to stop safely in all situations. don't want to be involved in any flame wars, however i do have too chuckle at some of the self-righteous replys to threads in instances such as this.

come on mungo, if the same thing happened to you, i bet you would be crying into your beer! i know i would!

Talking

Totally agree with brun,
Mungo next time you drive through any twisties,
ask yourself if you could stop in time if something
was in the middle of the road just around the corner,
why do you think we use roadsigns!
just a thought Tafyboyo!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the comments!!
I didnt really post to get flammed, however Yes It can be looked at from both sides..
On the bin factor in was a metal type and not plastic!!
I have my theory that it was more than likely clipped before me as it was on its side!
This road is not light with no pavements, yes it is a bit of a quick road too!!
Im gutted never had an insurance claim either!!
"Adrian flux" Here we come!!
Thanks again for your support guys
Regards
Andy

In a way, you were probably quite lucky, because if you'd have swerved to avoid it at the last minute, you might have ended up in a far worse situation!

Still, I suppose this is what insurance is for....

.... reminds of the time kids put sandbags across our road

and before you say it

YES I break the speed limit

BUT NEVER EVER near houses or built up areas NEVER

I dont want to kill some innocent pedestrian

if I want to kill myself by driving too fast I makes sure Im not going to kill anyone else in the process

its NOT worth it

MarkO

I dont have a problem with speeding

Just NOT outside someones house

even if they live along a quiet stretch of road

I slow down in such places

maybe its me gettin old now thats done it because I have been naughty a been speeding in built up areas in my teens
but I now see how wrong I was

having kids of my own and having a max powered corsa visiting someone down my road that treats the road as a race track dont help

when I catch up with him I AM going to hit him and I WILL end up in court because I've seen him almost knock my daughters friend off her bike before now

so speeding past houses is a bit of a sore point just now

other than that Im fine

Had a close call with a bin in the right hand lane of a dual carriageway myself, fortunately avoided.

For goodness sake, we *all* drive in a manner on single carriageway roads that we cannot stop safety when confronted with something dark coloured in the middle of the road at night round a corner! If you say "I do" and "You're a **** for driving SO fast", then you obviously don't have the faintest idea. Back to the man with the flag, what, what?

Just my tuppence worth.

Miles et al, with all due respect...having a blast in a residential area is a no-no in most (I would hope ALL) respectable driver's books. Never mind that plod may not catch you, you can undo yourself in a whole variety of ways and cause untold grief to more than one person.

Whether it be day or night, ripping through country villages is not something I would encourage. Close the roads off and that's a different story...

If you want to hit the twisties and have a bit of fun then look for a non-residential area to do your thing. Head up to your nearest mountain ! Fer God's sakes, don't do it anywhere where there's a blind bend, or anywhere where there may be citizens around. It's irresponsible and do you really want to have a child's life on your concience should one appear suddenly on the road??? God Forbid.

Drive fast, but drive SAFE.

Sorry, I'm not talking about built up areas - only referring to country roads where it can be difficult getting good visibility 100% of the time.
