Yeah I agree, totally over the top.
You shouldn't have answered Andy, by tomorrow the way the thread was going you'd prob have been going sideways through peoples front gardens @ 80mph, bald tyres, looking for pedestrians hiding in wheelie bins!

Its amazing how many people buy scoobys but never speed,
obviously just for the look
Would love to know how you see a bin in the road at night
unless your doing 10mph ,how you gonna see it
cheers mouse

FFS, the guy came round a bend and saw a bin, in the middle of the road or did you not read that bit, the bin was in the road, yeah? Now I'm from Yorkshire, I don't mind admitting that we, as a county, probably aren't the sharpest knives in the box but even I know that roads aren't the natural habitat, of bins
The guy hit the bin, by accident, that means he didn't do it on purpose
So you want to liken the bin to a human.... a tad unfair I think, I'll go into detail. Bins can't hear, that means they can't hear scoobs coming. They don't have eyes, that means they can't see scoobs coming. They can't move, that means even if they did have ears and eyes and were aware of an aproaching scoob, they would still be in the middle of the road, which I remind you, is not the natural habitat for bins.
Humans don't live on roads either but most do have ears, eyes and can move, this gives them an obvious advantage over bins... they'd more than likely, move out of the way of the aproaching scoob, problem solved

Andy, sounds nasty...and the flames are alittle out order...having lived out in the sticks, and driven around country lanes most of my lif I know how he feels...somone left a bin at the entrance to their house on say and A road...no pavements, not the place that you would find walkers...it blows over/gets knocked over, whatever...you can't alway avoid it, regardless of how fast your going...
Anyway be thankful it wasn't a wheel barrow!
Work colleague waiting to come onto a roundabout in Hayes had a wheelbarrow come out of no where and bounce off his windscreen
Thankfully it struck wheel first and did no damage and there was a witness who saw it fly off the back of a passing lorry and took down their number plate...needless to say the lorry didn't stop

Sorry to hear about this. Very occasionally on the twisties even driving at sensible speeds it's not possible to stop. A couple of years ago I came round a corner to find a school minibus immediately infront of me overtaking a HGV on double white lines, going uphill very slowly and in the rain. To stop without hitting the minibus or HGV I would have needed to be going at about 20mph or less and this was on an A road in the national speed limit. I was probably doing about 45-50mph and skidded into the HGV. Fortunately I walked away although my car wasn't so lucky.
Jeez Road Trip!!! I have never seen so many
's in a single post before!!
Andy - Sorry to hear about it, i'm fully with you on this "issue" that has kind of blown up a bit. If there is a bin on the road how can u possibly slow down and/or avoid the bin without leaving the road, it's pretty simple. Have you got some pics that you could post?

Sorry to hear of the incident Andy. I know the road well (i.e. national speed limit, very few houses) and although I don't drive along it in the Scoob too often it is certainly entertaining. Bad luck. Ignore the foolish comments from this roadrash character.
I'm usually driving our two-seater Galaxy with a reasonable load of wine, beer and spirits for my personal consumption.
You can have fun around the corners at VERY low speeds!

At least what was damaged was only material and wallet, it so easily could of been a life, so better think next time, just what is exactly round that next blind corner, so if you cant see it, dont believe it, not till you can see, then someone will not have to go there and pick up more than rubbish.
Yes, it could of been a bit of freek wind that blew it into the road, but, there is no answer other than driving at a speed that you can react to.

I feel for you mate,my scooby was hit by an advertising hoarding during that storm 5 weeks ago.Coachworks still waiting for the parts to arrive.Awaiting comments from the righteous ***** on this thread,LIKE "you shouldnt be out driving when its windy"or something ****e like that

Sometimes it amazes me the kind of people say on this forum - is there any need for comments like the ones made by roadtrip ? You may have a point, its just the manner in which you put it across....
Andy, sometimes these things happen, I've had a clean license and had a full NCB, but my car P1 got vandalised last year and I had to claim for 3k off the insurance company. I was with Flux / Sun Alliance and the claim was handled pretty well.
Oh and yes, you do get some right ars*holes on this forum - so always expect the unexpected when it comes to posting a thread....

Its just a shame roadtrip cant read - it was obviously a country road and not a built up area
Have to agree, the slef righteous bunch on here should **** off to bbs.skoda.com. I drive quickly on country roads - its what they are there for ffs, and why I own a performance car in the first place and not an A to B'er.
And for those that said "What if it was a child/person/animal stood there?". Well if any person/parent lets a child/animal/person stand in the middle of a country road in the dark, around a bend on an NSL road then it is there own fault - harsh but true!!!!!!!
Get off your high horses you dicks!!
Sorry to hear of the damage Andy

.... had a not-so-amusing incident myself about a couple of months ago on the M5. Was doing about 80 in the fast lane (just got my scoob a few days before), in the distance I see a badly laden truck weaving around mostly in the middle lane.
Slowed to about 65 as I approached, was just preparing to floor it and boot it past as he was weaving dangerously when a sofa, yes a whole F^&*ing SOFA, falls out the back and topples into the middle lane.
Narrowly avoided killing myself instead only dented the front wing during avoiding action - just shows there are a lot of irresponsible muppets out there.
a bin in the middle of a dark road, I ask you

Roadtrip, you really are an @rsehole. So, it's OK to risk crashing on a country road and killing someone and not outside someone's house
I hope I never meet you coming in the opposite direction on these quiet country roads.
If you're against speeding, then you should be against it everywhere and not just when it suits you.
Just wait until your haring round a bend and faced with some fecking half-ton of cow standing in your path or worse some people on horses/bikes.

dream weaver, you said what had to be said,
doc evil, i do agree, but the attacking nature of some posts is a bit much, think you not? i mean the way some go on , you would think they ain't car enthusiasts at all and are part of the anti motoring lobby! or people come on here merely to play devils advocate.
you get me?

Well I can sympathise with the poster who hit a bin. For those who arew flaming can I remind you he said this was a rural road, and I know the area and it is rural. All rural roads have occasional houses on them. Whilst slowing down to pass houses might be a good idea, and of course one should slow down through villagers, stand-alone houses are hard to see on rural roads, expecially if not lit and set back from the road.
Bummer about the bump mate
I have a test for some of you. Take your car this weekend and drive it down your favourite c-class road (you know the type, nice and tight and narrow and twisty - perfect for the scoob). This time make 100% sure that you always drive at a speed that would allow you to stop in the distance you can see....then report back please.
If you are doing it right (and honestly leaving enough space to stop) then I think you'll find that you are actually driving very slowly most of the time with some bursts of speed in the straights and that the scooby's cornering ability is about 90% un-used. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that IMO the majority of people that say they enjoy a weekend drive through the twisties but always leave space to stop are kidding themselves!
Disclaimer: I respect that some of you will actually always drive this cautiously but IMO the majority won't.

Well, first thoughts are, glad that it wasn't a cyclist or biker lying in the road, having come off after hitting a patch of diesel.
Just because it isn't "exciting" enough, the cars limits are "so much higher", or "everyone does it" is no defence for not being able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear.
Gary.

FLAMES FLAMES FLAMES!!!
Don't know about anybody else but I am sick of seeing people getting flamed for posting their experiences on this forum.
I reckon most of the flames come from hypocrits as well, how many of those with the flame throwers have modded their scoobs?
And to what end? Faster? better handling? Then what's the point if they apparently drive about at 10 miles an hour.
I think most people who drive a scoob have some experience of driving and are enthusiastic about it as well, this means a certain amount of pride in the way they drive which means being attentive to driving conditions.
From what Andy has posted it sounds like he stood little chance of avoiding the bin and if he had decided to take avoiding action who knows the end result could have been a lot worse.
If he was a driver who was not an enthusiast and couldn't decide on the correct course of action in a split second (Hit the bin or swerve into a tree\oncoming car) then he may not have been around to make the post.
Give the guy a break (and others who post their experience) or get off this forum and go buy yerselfs bi-fuel car and drive at 10mph everywhere.
Glad your ok Andy, it could happen to any of us including the flamers.

I can deal with it! I've got and always had a clean license but I do speed from time to time (when I feel its safe) and I accept the risks. If plod pulls me over and ask 'what you doing sonny' I'll say that 'I bought this car because I enjoy it, I felt it was safe to go fast in that circumstances but accept that its wrong and illegal' I'll then accept my points like a man!
