Quick answers needed RE: MOT please
#1
I would always go to a reputable company to have any work carried out on my cherished Scooby.
However I am doing my first MOT with it tomorrow. I have it booked in to my local Supertyres place where I always used to get my old Rover done.
Is there any reason this could be bad and should I be taking it somewhere more Scoobyesque if you know what I mean? - I remember a recent thread about rollers and handbrakes or something??
Quick answers would be appreciated as I have it booked in for the morning.
Thanks very much
Rikki

I always stay with the car when its having an MOT - garage shouldn't have a problem with you keeping a descreet distance & viewing what they do.
I had mine done for the first time yesterday - very non-scooby place but very professional & all testers were "mature" rather than boys who cant wait to get it out on the road to brake test it (at 120mph through the high street)
Only takes an hour so wait for it.

must admit I never saw them take my Rover out? Don't really want them to take my Scooby out either

All MOT station must provide a viewing area, so watching will be no worries, as said it should only take an hour or so.
That's also correct re road testing for the brake test, I shouldn't imagine there would be a problem if you were to drive the car whilst the tester operated the equiptment, he is allowed an assistant.

they have to take 4*4 wheel drive out for the brake test. They cannot do it on rollers as local garage found out with my scooby, they didnt know it was 4 wheel drive, Duh!
I nearly sh*t a brick when i found out what they were doing, thought they were going to wreck the whole drive system!

I had an XR4x4 a while back.
When I took it for an MOT, they took it out for a spin. I thought this was strange and I assumed they just wanted a spin in what was a quite impressive motor at the time.
Now I'm enlightened.
Rikki - How'd you get on at TN?
Cheers

I have a Mercedes G-wagon which is permanent four-wheel drive. The first MOT place I took it had to take the vehicle out on the road to test the brakes. The tester invited me to come with him (which was nice). The test was done with a little mechanical device resembling a wooden box which measures maximum force/ deceleration during braking.
However when the MOT was due again I went to a different MOT station and they tested it on the rollers and never took it on the road.
Are some MOT stations equipped differently with regard to their capability to test permanent 4x4s? Or did the second station do something wrong?

4wd shouldn't be tested on rollers due to possible damage to centre diff viscous coupling as already stated - however saying that, the workshop manual for 4x4 Sierra Cosworth states that roller testing is permitted provided 'speed' does not exceed 5mph and no longer than 5 mins duration.

The MOT station i use has a suspended type floor that you drive onto and hit the brakes. This tests the performance of all 4 corners at once.
Tester was very impressed just how quick it stopped.
