Parked in my local Tescos, just waiting for the engine to cool... car park attendent (man in his late 30s or so) says, "Nice car mate...is it a Cosworth"
I corrected him politely

The attentdent must see a loads each day " square box type things with uncontrolable wheels " more likely to see one laying in a ditch or river bank ..
Quote " waiting for the car to cool down " as I am new to scooby's if I us my car to pop down the shops, say 5 min's away, should I wait 2 min's for the engine to call down..???

Like it ....
Parked in a supermarket car park last week, my wife and I are just returning to the car when this teenager and his parents walk past looking at it. The lad pronounces "... seen phatter cosworths ...".
... maybe I should register the username "SlimScooby"

Terzo23,
It's not the engine you need to cool down, but the turbo. As DavidRB says, it depends on how hard you drive. If the "5 min's away" bit means that it's 5 mins by driving at 80+ mph at 3000+ rmp, or you are doing a lot of accelerating under boost, then yes, I would let it cool. For normal pootling along I wouldn't bother.

Terzo23, if you've only used your car from cold, the engine will still be cold after 5 mins (i've noticed it takes about 10 mins of normal driving to get oil up to temperature), so i'd hope you've hardly used the car on boost anyway, in which case the turbo wont need that long to cool down.
Back to the thread though, i got pulled by a traffic cop a couple of years ago in my MY00, and he said "What is it, a Mitsibishi?"!!
Surely a Taffic cop would know what a bloody Subaru is?!!
Do anyone else find that you get most attention/comments from ten year old kids?!

Blimey, what have I started here !!!!!!!
The scoob is a 2nd (almost 3rd) car and I had taken out today for a run...finishing at my "local" Tescos. Tescos is about 2 miles away, I probably did 25 miles to get there...thus the need to cool down the turbo. Hope that explains a little more

Filling up with petrol tonight, bloke returns to his white rover alongside my WR Blue STi7 and comments "Nice old bus!". Now I think he was referring to my car, but......

Turbo cool down ... recommended if you've recently been on boost within say past couple of miles of your trip, particularly on a hot summers day ... yes, I know BUT we DO get them sometimes ... hot days that is ...
I believe the continued throughput of the cooler lubricant for the turbo at engine idle speeds is just as important for the well being of the turbo as the actual cooling process after switch off. I believe these things rotate at up to 130,000 rpm on full boost and sustained or repeated boosts generate huge temperatures. Failure to allow time for lubricant and turbo to cool sufficiently after such treatment will sooner or later result in a cracked turbo main body housing assembly. Cracks sometimes across one of the bearings... OUCH ... and yes, EXPENSIVE ......
You've been warned ...

You only have to feel the heat generated when the fan kicks in my mate thought my car was on fire. Mind due so did my mum when I parked it up outside the house not long after having it and the heat was coming out of the scoop and turning the water on the bonnet into little puffs of steam .
