Firstly I dont want to be called an idiot or be flamed or nothing but I've had my UK 99 Turbo for about 6 months and been very happy with it, I got a reasonable time at Santa Pod of 14.64 which I thought wasnt bad with a stereo install and full tank of petrol.

I've "accelerated fast whilst pulling away from the lights, next to another car also doing the same", and beaten some impressive cars, but this evening I was with a Escort RS Turbo and he was running standard boost and had a few engine modifications, and i didnt pull away like I expected but instead pulled away slowly.

Now, i would expect to be a fair way ahead from standstill because of superior traction but roilling at 60mph and then going for it I should have left him for dust, surely?

It also seems that there are a lot of factory cars getting close to the good old 215hp classic shape, is it showing its age in general do we think?

If so what should I do to get my edge back? Is it purely a matter of a decat like some suggest or will this not give me my advantage back?

You MUST have OPTIMAX in the tank

I have thrashed a P1 in my standard UK - the P1 was running SUL, I had OPTIMAX!!! He had NO stereo and had lost 2 doors but I still sorted him!!

You serious m8? a P1? btw I have 3/4 tank of optimax! But I usually use SUL cos I actually find it allows me to run higher up the revs before cutting back!

A standard UK will sort out a P1 - remember P1's are owned by people with ideas of grandeur - while they are looking at themselves in the Rear Mirror you can gain that edge

Remember I am 72 and thus have a BIG edge in Experience, the 'Kiddies' with P1's are all fingers and thumbs - I have an arsenal of hand/eye/foot co-ordination tricks that would baffle all those under 50!!

UHF, don't get caught in the plewis web..!

I'm actually surprised you were that close to an RS Escort in a standard UK.

Make sure you have an un-restricted down pipe and decent back box - that is the single biggest improvement you can make, and done properly worth up to 30bhp. A panel air filter, and a bottle of octane booster in the tank will also help.

Beyond that, you're looking at ECU replacement alternatives, by which time you might want to invest in an STi and save yourself the hassle...

I was thinking of upgrading to an STi, although insurance is bad enough as it is, I was planning on getting one of those new ScoobySports systems in January and seeing how it went.

After you've acquired the STi, you can then chip it to 303bhp.

Oh, this will require the use of gold alloys, otherwise you'll only get 295-300bhp depending on which RR you test on

Sorry, UHF - ok, serious now - are you sure the Escort owner didnt push something up your exhaust while you werent looking? while its getting blown out it affects your back pressure and slows you down .... THEN when you look - after the run - and its GONE of course!! Its a good trick I used to play on 3Litre Capris when I would surprise them in my Cortina!!

I'm not interested on going mad, just putting my car that little bit ahead of done up hot hatches, the problem is that everyone sees an impreza who doesnt know much and craps themselves, but a UK car only has 215hp and its kind of embarrasing when they arent as far behind as they should be!

Also my mate just bought a Civic Type R which will no doubt be biting on my bumper!

Stop thinking your scoobs invincible for a start. As standard it can be taken by a number of cars and its very easy in a scoob to change gear at the wrong time.

Full decat and dawes is a good start for extra power and much better sound Tek3 if your feeling rich on top of that and then you've got some useful power

(that is providing thats the first thing to die in such a situation on a flat 4, havent looked at a proper drawing yet!), oh and stop winding me up! Unless of course you wanna talk about computers and then its my turn!

Personaly I'd go down the De-cat route and fit either a dawes or a TEK2 or 3

There is always something bigger and faster out there, that's life. I've had mines for 3-4 months now and whilst I've not had many 'races' I've won every one I've had. Got a thing for GT-4's....weird!! Last one ran me real close but I got him

Honest UHF - the heads didnt blow on the Capris, it doesnt FULLY block the exhaust - just restricts it. We used to use a potato of the right size, it would rattle about baffling the engine (and owner by the way!) - but eventually fly out - by then my Cortina was well ahead and they were agast!! Good Trick!! No, REALLY!

By the way - whats that about computers?? At my age I am rather slow with them, so you would easily humiliate me - but why would you want to?

Pete

I think whats really biting my brain about the impreza is that i'm used to rickety hot hatches, when you go 60 in 6 seconds it feels fast if you're in a fiesta! but when you do it in 5.x in an impreza its just not the same experience, guess I'm gagging for the thrill again, god i'm actually saying that my impreza isnt thrilling, but its seriously not! perhaps an exhaust note will change the way it feels to drive if only from a perceptive perspective

Question

Surely to god I cannot be the only one to do this??

Maybe it was a seventies thing??

I shall take my potato elsewhere!!

Pete

Anyway - we are hijacking this thread, talk about why an Impreza could have got got beaten by an Escort, my idea was genuine - if a little old hat maybe?

UHF,
the standard scoob exhaust is very restrictive it begins to decrease the power by 5.5k rpm where as a larger less restrictive exhaust will take you cleanly to the red line, this is the cheapest option for decent power that doesnt need any messing around etc (the dawes is cheaper but how much will a boost gauge cost you? and it will work better with a free flowing exhaust too).
