Question

Over the last few weeks I've noticed that the steering on my UK MY00 creaks quite loudly when the steering wheel is turned at very slow speeds or when stationary (eg. winding on the steering lock).

The car's going in for a service soon so I'll mention it then but has anyone else had a similar thing on their car? The only thing I have wondered about is that I had the bump steer mod done about 3 months or so ago and thought that maybe that might be contributing somehow.....

Any ideas?

Hi Simon
I have EXACTLY the same problem on my MY99.
Mine first sounded about 2 months after the BS mod (not sure if linked though).
I managed to stop it by spraying everything around the steering rack with WD40.
That stopped it for a few months.
Its now come back and I can't stop it

Out of interest, mine only creaks when the car is up to operating temperature...same with you ?

I'll mention it AGAIN at my next service in a few days......
Both the Subaru dealer and PS in Cheltenham have checked the rack bolts and said are nce and tight.
Its obviously something expanding with the heat....any ideas ???

I've had very similar symptoms from my MY00 - although it's more of a scraping than a creaking. Had it checked by the dealer under warranty, who couldn't find anything wrong. Apparently (and I'm not too sure I believe this) a certain amount of noise is normal...

Andy.

Had a similar experience on a Fiat Coupe, after much head scratching it transpired to be a seized trackrod end.

Cheers for the replies guys.
I was a bit worried that if I get anything replaced under warranty then I'd have to have the bumpsteer redone

I'll see what the folks at Tileys say when it goes in to be serviced....

Simon

I had exactly the same problem. i too had the bumpsteer mod doen, and after about 3 months the steering started creaking. Spoke to Rich at powerstation and he said that sometimes the bushes in the steering rack need greaseing up, but that he does not believe the bumpsteer to be the cause. Took the car to my dealer, who replaced the steering rack under warranty. Only problem now is i have to have the Bumpsteer redone

I seem to remember reading something on Scoobynet about fragile trackrod ends on the MY99

Question

I also have this problem on my Astra GSi...
Only seems to occur at very low speeds.
Not track rod ends cause they were replaced last year?

Falulty steering rack maybe?
