tune WRX or buy STi??
#1
as im fairly new to this Scooby-lark, I was wondering what the general opinion is as to whether i would be better off getting my MY01 WRX 'tuned' a bit, or saving the money for an STi (if I can ever get enough together).
The WRX has some of the usual bits - Morrettes, gold wheels, sports grille, and also has full Subaru leather trim (quite rare Im told?)
Also, which performance bits would be worth doing?
Any advise or opinions would be appreciated - cheers.

Get yourself a turbo back decat then wait on the imminent Ecutek package (about £600 i think).
This should see you with over the STI7s 268bhp I reckon and a few bob left in your pocket

If you can afford it, save and get the STi, it is a better car than a wrx (even a modified one) and will only be slightly more to run (but maybe quite alot higher to insure?)
It has alot of advantages over a wrx (stronger engine, gearbox, clutch, better brakes etc) so if you add up how that would match for the ammount you would need to spend to make it up in a wrx you would be looking at 5k atleast.
Tony
ps, yup the leather is very rare!

Taking your WRX to a dealer to trade up to an STI would cost you a ballpark £8-10,000 !
In terms of warranty, there's little over a year remaining on your car, assuming it's a UK car anyway.
I can't speak for all dealers but mine is quite happy to honour warranty issues although the car has been modified outwith the handbook guidelines.
Forgot to mention, suspension and geometry might be another area you may wish to throw a little money at.

I had the same dilema,
If i kept the WRX, i'd have had to put decent brakes on it, the STi gets the Brembo's.
Then there's the springs, Zorst, etc.
Go for the STi deffo.
She bought an STi as well!

forgot to mention - how do you convince 'her in doors' of either option!

Same as STI MAN - went from a modded WRX to an STi7, never looked back - and my wife has an STi too (bugger, thought we were the only husband and wife with an STi each )
(only thing I can say to try and get some one upmanship on him is that we both had a MY00, then both had a WRX, then the STi's ).

STi7 with PPP
Mine has and it make the car feel like how it should of been in the First place it takes the 4Krpm neck break acceleration out and makes it A lot smoother, more progressive and quicker a dream to drive in town slowly or out on a fast road the Suretrac diff's definately looooves the extra Torque

hmmm......STi seems to be the general opinion.
had a drive in one today at local dealer - 4000rpm seems to be where hell breaks loose! pretty firm ride too, but slings around corners!
ahh well, just need one more bit of advice then - where do you get the money from guys?

I think you've all misunderstood the original post.
He already has a WRX and is considering trading up to an STI.
Can you really justify the £10K it'd cost to make such a move?

In a similar situation myself. A few places Ive tried locally (Herts, Bucks) dont have any at the moment and one quoted me 4 months for a new one - worth holding out for the new shape next year. Other option is import - any suggestions? I have an MY02 wr blue and trade in prices are pretty low.
Some interesting comments - just what I was after too.

Scooby Dooby Blue does have a point - an £8-10k to change figure is a bit eye watering, specially as only had the car for 7months.
maybe best to upgrade WRX gradually, and spread cost?

True story time...
Years ago...I had the dosh to either:
(a) buy a 16v model of the car I wanted
(b) buy the V6 model of the car I wanted
Thinking of the insurance costs, and the lower purchase price, I went for the 16v model. Whilst it was a fairly good motor and served me very well, I was never 100% happy with it and I was always sure I would have been much happier with the V6 model - a better performer and all round, a better car.
Moral of the story? Don't settle for less.
Recently I was in the market for a scoob - which model was the big question - WRX, or WRX STi, SportzVagon even?
So...which model? Do I go the same route as before and buy a car which I won't ever be happy with, even if I were to modify it? Or just say, hell...go for the car I want !.
You have the WRX MY01 - test drive an STi. You'll find the answer is that there is no question - if you have the money get the STi. The WRX is not the same car. Not at all. Spend all the money you want, do all the mods, put all the stickers you want on it...a WRX is not an STi. C'est la creme de la creme n'est pas?...and the Prodrive versions are just a little bit more expensive for the extra bodywork...(talking about the standard Prodrive version not the PPP).
This...from a newbie scoobie owner who is now putting his flamesuit on, preparing the extinguishers, and installing smoke alarms I may not survive
I really appreciate all the bog standard gear which comes with my glorious MY02 fugly as I raced up and down some *seriously* twisty mountain roads in the Jura mountains (France) at lunchtime today - 140km/h heading into a hairpin, slam on the Brembo's and cruise around it in second. Smooth. Oh, so very, very, sexily, smooth...in a rumpy ride...but, smooth all the same. That was on the way up. Unfortunately on the way down there was a lot of on-coming traffic so I took it very easy but was able to have a bit of fun on the hairpins on the way back down. I'd love to see John Felsted do this little run, I'm sure he would enjoy it so very much.
The STi is a gorgeous car to drive if you don't mind a bit of rough...the acceleration is breathtaking and it pulls to a stop very, very, quickly. It's gonna shake your bones over every bump in the road. I've found that the rougher I treat her, the more she just loves it and I've just finished running in the engine today so a whole host of fun is in store for next week !
Bottom line - get the STi. Why settle for less if you can afford it?
