Question

Just finished my holidays - I tow a folding camper ..... yes, I know, sad - but hey someones got to do it!!

I have said this before but, when towing, the rear wheel arches rub on the outside of the tyres getting them rather too warm for my liking ... and its starting to pi55 me right off!!

I have lowered the noseweight on the towball as low as I can safely go without making the whole outfit unstable - suffice to say that it is well below the max. figure of 75kg that Subaru state.

I dont want to spoil the handling of the car by fitting special shockers so thought about the idea of spring assisters (which effectively allow 'bottoming-out' about an inch before the car normally would) this would effectively keep the arches away from the tyres. To order the correct assisters I needed to supply details of the distance between two coils on the rear springs .... ok, simple ... EXCEPT for the fact that Subaru have fitted just ONE coil of spring!! is this design or another example of cost-cutting??

My other cars have had, what? 5 or 6 coils of spring on the rear??? with just one I cannot fit the assisters so am effectively knackered.

I mentioned this some while ago and someone said that they had a look at theirs and they had NO springs whatsoever!!!!????

Anyone any idea what is standard?? have you got a spring?? if so how many full turns/coils does it have?? would a 5-door be different than a saloon??

Before anyone says that you shouldnt be towing with a Scoobie lets all remember that these are farmers cars for gods sake!! they should be able to tow a combine harvester up the North face of the Eiger and then come back for the wife and kids!! WITHOUT the tyres fouling on the arches!!!

Wink

So boring without you Pete that I thought I may as well go on holiday for a couple of weeks .

Welcome back

As for the wheels rubbing... I'm sure it wouldn't happen with a Legacy!

I havent done trackdays - wouldnt mind taking a look see - doubt whether I would treat my Scoobie in such a viscious way!!

My weight disadvantage could prove too costly

I DID have a go on 70mph Go-Karts on holiday mind you!! ripped the nearside front tyre off the rim!! and crashed into the tyre wall!! so I am a little concerned about racing round a track in my everyday transport!!

I dunno wot size wheels you're using, but assuming that they're gold, it might be worth taking the rubber strip off the wheelarches and see if thatworks, it's only a little bit, but that might be all you need.
Just a thought,
Ron
