Should I remove the Red Flare from the footwell???
#1
Since I have had my Jap WRX, I have never removed the red flare that is nicely tucked away in the passenger side footwell.
I gather in Japan they may use these flares for rescue purposes; I wouldn't need it here would I...
Please advise, all replies are welcome...

I have been told that they should have been removed when the car goes through its SVA.
Bear in mind its considered an explosive and may be dealt with accordingly by the authorities.
fun though

Serious hat on:
If it's out of date, take it to the police/coastguard (like one would with out of date marine flares(and I don't mean trousers either)) for disposal.
If you live anywhere the coast or near the Thames, don't let it off on Nov.5 or any other night (unless you want a lifeboat in your back garden)
If you must fire it up, leave it on the ground, if you really want to hold it, wear an oven glove and make sure the pretty end is pointing downwards so all the hot bits that pi55 out don't ruin your oven glove.
I wouldn't want pyrotechnics in my footwell in case of crashes or excessive flatulence.
Christ I'm bored

Dave

I've been wondering the same thing, and something else as well.
How do I set it off? It's nothing like the marine flares I'm used to and I don't understand the Japanese instructions. It *looks* as though you drag the top on something. Or take the top off. Or break it. Or hit it. Or...
Anyone know? Just for safety, of course.

For some reason when I bought my Impreza, I got the usual old red flare you talk about, except mine is made by Toyota!!
I guess the jap nutter used the origianl Subaru one and the toyota garage was nearer!

they are there because of the rally heratige, if you were to get stuck on a night stage you could let the marshals know you were a distressed motorist and presto hey you were saved . p.s. don't give it to kids, enough explosive to take you head off !!!!!

Be careful if you let it off m8 , a mate of mine let off a high vis orange marine flare that was out of date, and the smoke that it gave off stained his drive orange, oops.

What sort of flare is it, a hand flare or rocket one? Whatever you do, be aware that it'll drop nasty molten metal everywhere and make a horrible stink. There's always loads of people over here letting out-of-date distress flares off around bonfire night. I know of a policeman who was called out because someone had sent up a rocket flare and the parachute failed. It landed on a car and burnt through the roof and out through the floor!!

Interesting picture... I thought it would be a firework type thing...
So after reading all the replies and posts, is it safe to assume it is legal and safe to keep in the car???

They're 'candle' type flares anyhow - not the ones that launch off into the sky - not exactly a spectacular event.......
The clip is the perfect size for a C-cell Maglite (which are quite hard to find) - I find it more useful than a flare though.....

Good to hear someone else knows there are lifeboats on the Thames!
Muf.
Edited to say I doubt if they would respond to a candle type flare in a back garden
