I had a MY00 turbo for 2 years, spent 5 grand on mods (FMIC, Boost controller, ECU, Suspension, full decat, etc) so in all the car had cost me about £22,000 !
I've recently spent £21,000 on an immaculate, low mileage P1, and i've realised that no matter how much money i'd have thrown at the MY00 car, it would never have had the unique, amazing feel of even a standard P1 (spose Prodrive can put together a better scoob than most of us, eh )
Get a P1, and trust me, you will not regret it and will never feel the need for anything else.

Cheers,

One happy P1 owner !

Unhappy

Sorry to start this debate up again.

But I have approx. 20k for a new toy, and I am looking to change MY97 red turbo for something more powerful.

P1 or RB5 - Which one? Fors and Against?

I love the look of the P1 but for 4k less I could get a pucker RB5 and spend the 4k and some extras.

Can I have any comments from scoobynetters who have made the switch.

I'm a P1 owner and previously had a decat MY00 PPP with various suspension mods. The P1 is another world in comparison.
A PPP'd RB5 with £2k of suspension mods will still not have the same punch as a P1. Buy a standard P1 and you can have the performance you want without the need to immediately go out and buy more bits to go on it.
On the other hand, there are less RB5s about so there is an element of exclusivity - if that's what you're after.

If you're into modding and £20k is your limit then maybe the RB5 is the one but if you want an off the shelf performance bargain, shop around and get a P1.
Or, of course, you could get an STi5 or 6 for RB5 money.......?

decisions, decisions

STi V Type R, suspension, brakes, exhaust, front mount intercooler, turbo, fuel pump, ECU, gauges. Could this all be done for the same price as a P1? Very possibly....

I have owned an RB5 WR Sport and these are lovely cars and rare now in nice condition, but for all the trick bits I'd buy a P1.
Only reason I haven't is the fact that I have a pillar in my garage which without modification won't allow me to have a two door car. ( cause I'm fat and won't be able to get out )

Go on get the P1 they are cracking motors.( and the best colour )
I would even consider having a deal with someone against my STi 7 and sod the garage.

reckon you will have more than 4k left to spend on mods, i was in the same predicament when i bought my MY00 at the start of the year, but saved myself roughly 8k on buying a p1.

after spending just over 1k so far on mods, i can already keep up with my mates standard P1, after an ECU remap, induction kit, i should be overtaking him, then a few grand on big brakes and suspension - which will total a lot less than 8k.

get the RB5 and get modding matey

Get a Type R for RB5 money and then spend the money you have saved on mods. That way you get the best of both worlds. The two door coupe shape and P1 beating performance.

Go for the P1....I had an MY98 for 2 years that I lovingly modified but always liked the look of the P1.Eventually I bought one and ran the 2 Scoobs side by side (now that IS a clever driving technique!!)for over 12 months....the P1 was always the better car IMO on looks and performance.Ive always loved RB5's,but the P1 does it for me every time.I had to sell her recently cos of a back problem and I suffer withdrawal symptoms every day!
Glad to hear you're having fun Steve give her a kiss for me will ya!

P1 all the way, an RB5 is basically a UK car and you won't notice to much difference... if you can afford it you may aswell do it properly and get a P1, you'll only be gutted when a P1 leaves you for dust if you get an RB5

as a very happy RB5 WR Sport owner, I have to disagree with Stealth. I traded my MY99 in for the RB5 about 3 months ago. I also considered a P1 at the time. My reasons for going for the RB5 were practicality of having 4 doors and more importantly for me - I knew I would have been a nervous wreck every time I left a P1 parked somewhere.
I was worried that I would regret the decision but certainly havent so far. The RB5 is noticeably quicker than the standard UK Turbo and as EVO magazine put it - it has "perfect poise and balance".
I really cant imagine a P1 leaving an RB5 for dust. Certainly the P1 will be faster but not by very much.
Only you can really decide which way to go. All I am saying is that I went for the RB5 and am very pleased I did. If I had been looking for a second car which would be garaged and not used as everyday transport then I would have chosen the P1,as I have always loved them. But for me, the RB5 is perfect.

Sorry mate but you appear to be misinformed.
The RB5 uses the STi5 body shell meaning that it has a solid rear bulkhead so you could argue that it's a Jap car.

And as far as P1's leaving you for dust I think you'll be very happy when the P1 goes for it and you are right there with him
and if you get some mods done then you'll be leaving him for dust

If you want a UK limited edition and you don't need 4 doors then get the P1 if you need 4 doors then get the RB5. If it doesn't have to be UK then get the RA

Mike

Talking

Sorry Mike but a standard WRSport RB5 won't be alongside a P1 Admittedly there won't be that much in it (not in the real world) but in Scoobynet-land we're still talking 240Bhp vs 276Bhp with similar tq figures. The P1 revs longer and harder too. Also if I did go mod mad again (which I'm trying to avoid with this car) I could easily extract a safe 300+ Bhp out of the P1 for under £1000.

Everyone will pretty much defend his or her own car but, like I said above somewhere, I had a PPP MY00 with decat, bigger intercooler, suspension etc etc and as far as I'm concerned my P1 is just such a nicer and faster car to drive.

All IMHO of course

Not 240bhp

Mine has consitently produces between 250 and 260 and I didn't say that the RB5 WRSPORT would out perform a P1 what I said was that the RB5 will stay with the p1

I have a few friends with P1's and I **** them off all the time because in the REAL WORLD which is the one that I live in there's nothing in it.

Anyway they're both fabulous cars, if you don't need 4 doors then get the P1 it's that simple

Forget engine power at the fly what your power at the wheels that what really counts as it drives the wheels. My guess is a P1 will have a lot more at the wheels than an RB5 maybe 40/50bhp. An RB5 WR sport has the same engine as a MY99 with a PPP the solid rear bulkhead wont make a huge difference. Teh reaosn mags liek them was that they stuck 17" wheels on which are much better than teh standard 16" on the standard Uk turbo and easily fixed. They were no suspension differences unless you paid extra for the prodrice handling pack which could also be purchased for a UK turbo .
