Can someone tell me how much someone earning 20k a year should expect to take home each month after taxes, and national insurance etc.

I cant find a web site for it so was wondering if anyone knew the answer or where I could find it out!

From my calculations you will end up with about 1250 a month. This figure may be different if you have been on a different wage since April.

I have heard there is a tax calculator on the freeserve homepage (follow the links for finance) but I have not checked it out myself yet, and I have also seen tax calculator programs on coverdisks from PC magazines.

Thumbs up

You can always get a rough estimate by dividing the gross by 16 - just in case anyone is interested

The 16th rule works by assuming that the 4 extra months are tax and NIC. Approx 33%.

This will only work on basic rate tax payers though. 17 or 18 will work for those peeps.

That's what I was on before July, £1272 sounds right, it was definitely £127? If you want an exact figure I'm sure I could dig out an old pay slip.

Along with the mortgage I eat very little, don't drink at all, and make healthy use of those nice VISA people

The answers so far exclude any possible pension deductions. Since they (up to 15% of your gross) are tax deductable, they reduce the amount you get by less than what you are paying. That means that the government is contributing to your personal pension, which is always a good thing!
