As some of you may already know (=be bored senseless of), I have to buy a couple of cars, and have a certain budget to do it. Due to funny constraints, I have to keep them for five years, so I absolutely can't make the wrong decision. So I'm trying to balance all the different needs: fun round twisties, big and flexible enough for a family, easy to park in small places, economic on long journeys, etc.
We started with a WRX 5-door for me and an A-class for her. This metamorphosed over some months, and much agonizing, to a second-hand Caterham (which I just found, the only one in Portugal ) for me, and a diesel RAV4 for her, which is juuuuust about within budget (ok, 2 grand over).
Recently I showed her the Times article that Paul Habgood (ISTR) posted up about the mother taking her kids round in an STI. I also told her about the thread "How do I convince my wife to buy a WRX as a sensible family car?" and the numerous answers saying "Let her test drive it and watch the grin start".
Last night I came home with the latest What Car 2002 test results, and she started flicking through, including looking at Subaru and the WRX's multitude of 4/5 ratings. She asked "How much is that Toyota jeep?" So I told her. "And how much is the Impreza?" Er, about the same. "So why don't you get the Impreza and the Caterham?".
I went
I'm still trying to recover….
It's our first wedding anniversary this weekend. It's the little sacrifices made by each side that show true love, isn't it?
Oh, as background; she's a smidgen over 35 and is just starting to take driving lessons. Can you imagine her at the wheel of either of them in a few months' time?

Fuzz - yes, two, but they're already married
David - new kitchen? We've spent the past year looking for a new HOUSE!
Given that the best insurance quote for an Impreza alone was 1400 euros (about 900 quid) I think the idea will be financially unfeasible, but I'm savouring it while it lasts

Brendan,
Have a similar tale myself. I started with a 200sx and bought a 106 for my girlfriend to learn in (and to drive sprog around in when it turns up).
Girlfriend says how she really likes imprezas and convinces me to look into getting one.... had a look at a few and she decided she wanted the 5dr. I couldn't believe the grin that came over her face when she first sat in a scoob (she hasn't even passed her test yet)... she just turned to me and said "I want it."
Drove away in it a few days later. Sold the 200sx and the 106.
All i need to do now if find myself an old esprit for the weekends

they can be a funny species at times. when my wife test drove the impreza she came out with:
clutch is quite light for the power it has to handle
turn in is good but it's not quite point and shoot as my MR2
Isn't it great fun when it goes fast when you rev it (she was refering to the turbo)
Now she loves driving it and seeing how fast she can go round corners - I hate her driving my car when I'm the passenger. I'm so critical of her drving it hard even though that's exactly what I do. The biggest problem seems to be jealousy from other men in golf Gti's etc.

What version of wife have you got?
I have V1.1 which is the one that wasn't too impressed with me selling the Mk2 Golf GTI and getting a scoob, but secretly she loves it (and the scoob ).

I've got wife version 1.0 with integrated 'spend lots of husbands's cash on shoes and other clothing items that will only be worn once' device.
Mind you this version is into cars and says things like "Would it be OK if i got you a PPP as a combined birthday and christmas present?" I've just realised why I marrried the girl...

Wanted - Husband willing to provide the following
1. I require my own 4 door Turbo (not bug eye) in any colour other than yellow, sonic blue, silver, bright red. Must have AC, mid level spoiler and have no hissing dump valve.
2. Husband must have a car of his choice such that he doesn't steal mine.
3. The Husbands above car must come with a towing hitch so I may tow trailers as required.
4. Husband must come with love of DIY greater than modding cars.
5. Must be willing to share cooking and cleaning duties.
6. Must be compatible with my parents.
7. All DIY and essential car maintenance should not require a "Watcher" or similar thinly disguised tasks such as tool hander.
8. London pied-a-terre a highy desirable benifit.
9. Must like showering at least once a day.
10. Husband must not think I require a job to support any of the above.

I have the girlfriend version 2002.10 which asks me what do i want. in June she asked me what do i want for my car: i said stereo, so she got me a nice 370 quid alpine CD-player. One month ago she asked the same, i answered turbo-timer, she got me a nice APEXi automatic turbo timer(calculates how much time is needed by itself receiving data from the engine sensors. yesterday she asked what do i want for my birthday and i answered: a MOMO Millenium and a nice set of seats and she said: steering wheel next week, seats next month. NICEEEEEE huh??? last time i got her a present was on x-mas. I am so deeply in love that i forget to get her presents. :}
will it be unfair if on x-mas i ask her to buy me a flip respray for my car???
