To Skyline GTR33 or not?
#2
Been thinking of selling my lovely fully loaded STI V5 and getting a Skyline. Does anyone out there have any experiences of these cars at all?
I know the masses will be very dissapointed by my suggested action, sorry!

Ian in my humble honest opinion "YES BUY ONE"!!!!
Ive driven a fair few of these now and they are simply awesome! I looked at another one a few months back but the word Money for an everyday car which is practical and reliable has always come into the way as im travelling over 100 miles per day.
Make sure you get a V Spec, have a look at the GTR Websites as they can explain the differences to you. Also make sure if the car has been serviced in the UK for a while its better to have it serviced by Middlehurst MSport or Abbey MSport.
Mildy modded ones are ok, I looked at a 98 550BHP R33 and it drove fine but there was always the worry something major going wrong with it.
If in the right hands a Skyline would seriously make a Scoob look slow around a track, you will hear many people talking about overtaking them on track but once in the right hands there isn't much that can keep up!

I've had the pleasure of being a passenger in a v-spec R34 and loved it.
If general running costs aren't an issue, i.e: petrol (which they use a lot of) then have a serious look.

My only bad experience was a small 'headbutting' incident at a roundabout (ie my R33 headbutted the back of my mates car) - no damage to his but mine - oh dear
It was a very low speed impact but it knocked my front bumper in, which bent the steel support back just enough to puncture the intercooler, and up just enough to crack a headlight and push the wing out slightly. It looked poorly!
A new intercooler? Try 1600 squids, new headlight? 400 squids. Tony & co @ Abbey Motorsport did a fantastic job and did me a 2nd hand intercooler for 100 quid! Still 2 grands worth of damage for a very light impact tho!
Servicing is nothing - i paid 300 quid for a full service and that includes all parts/labour and some DS2000 pads!

had got myself sorted with a nice sti5 a month or two ago. everything was peachy. then i drove an r33 gtr vspec, circa 400bhp.
one week later the sti was gone.
at 400bhp, theyre not really quicker than an sti5. they do it so much differently. a skyline almost feels slow, until you look at the speedo
the difference i guess is that when the sti is running out of puff, the r33 keeps going...and going
its a totally different experience. its a bit macho, the gear change is not kinda slick and vague, you whack em in, dump valves whooshing, exhaust a popping as you growl towards the horizon
theyre not as good in the twistys as a scooby, but theyre no slouch either. but on a motorway theyre lovely to drive.
i wouldnt keep the standard vspec suspension, call me a whuss, but i hate tramlining at the best of times, but a vspec pulls you all over unless you keep a tight reign.
a scooby is dependable, safe and you know where you are with it.
the r33 is a beast. you'll either love it or hate it.i loved it from the first minute i got in it. ive had it a month now, and i wouldnt get rid of it. i change cars more often than is sane, yet this ones outlasted an sti5 and a 330ci
to me its all about the mods. i love doing it. next month she gets some work done shell be nearer 600bhp
to me , its the coolest car ive ever owned bar none
any other help etc, just giz a shout, im happy to help

Well this is the same sort of switch I was thinking of. I am keen on an R33GTR and they are currently £15k-£23k which I think is something of a bargin for what you get.
Running costs don't don't seem much different from a Jap Scooby which I am currently running, also I think a £15k skyline will hold its value better than a £15k Scooby.
Anyway if anyone knows of any sub £18k Gtr's for sale near Bristol please let me know.

Not neccesarily the joys of owning a Skline but more so the end result of over tuning your Skyline.
If i go a head with the plan 360 BHP for a while then to 400 BHP running 1 bar will do for me.

Ian the car is great, I am not looking to buy for about a month (hopefully less, new job starting next week, if all goes well I will be spending the £££££) but I was looking to drive a couple so I knew what to aim for (price/spec etc) which is why I was looking for something local! When I do buy I will happily travel up and down the country for the right car
Thanks
Jon
