Anyone know what the law is on this, I'm thinking of getting a smaller one. I've seen bikes with small rear ones (but haven't we all), but I've spoken to some people and their not sure, I presume this also applies the the writing style.
Thanks

The standard size is the minimum legal requirement in terms of lettering.
Their is a limit on the minimum spcae between the edge of the numbers and the edge of the plate, and also between the numbers and the last three letters. All of which normal plates comply with.
Smaller square ones are not legal. Square ones using the same size lettering are fine.
I have a small square offset front plate which is 80% of legal size. Since the lettering is standard, I cant imagine the police can be bothered.

The law is about to change as far as number plates are concerned.
From the 1st of September, all number plates made must comply with the new regs. regardless of whether or not they're for a new car.
More details can be found

The law on plates is changing, and the fines are about to become outrageous. Why? So that we all have nice large plates that the GATSOs etc can read.
For details, try the DVLA site;

Maybe the Gatso's should have eye tests, they can pick things up pretty well and the digital ones even better. Maybe it's for the plod, they seem to see things in different ways.
