Just to clarify that the Beltronics Euro 550 Group buy is still running at £320.00 delivered.

It's just that we have had scobbynet readers enquiring over the last week or so asking about it.

Thanks Networx

Question

Sorry, I'm sure it has been asked a million times before but does it detect GATSO? My wife has been caught twice in three weeks (37 in a 30 both times) and I think it is time to do something about it! Would I be better off with one of the GPS things?

If you are just worried about Gatso camera's a Geodesy would be the best device.

I've been running both now for about a month.

Generally, if you're sticking to main roads, a Geodesy is extremely useful, especially in areas where you haven't learned where the Gatsos are.

But, the Bel 550 does do a lot that Geodesy doesn't, e.g. every mobile unit you'd care to mention.

Sometimes i don't think the Bel550 gives as much warning as i'd like. At the weekend, we had a mini Gatso nearby, so i went back and forward testing the unit's positioning etc. I found that it was quite sensitive, and got a lot better with just an inch or two adjustment on the windscreen, where it completely avoided the windscreen wipers.
But, it didn't go bananas even then until i was in the line of fire. Which means every time i get a radar alert, i tend to over-react in case it's another mini-Gatso, whereas in a built-up area it could be lots of different things, banks in particular.
Also, it can be a bit unnerving when you're approaching a Gatso that isn't live, and the Bel550 does nothing. Do you trust it?! Is it working properly? So far, i've slowed down for each Gatso, whether or not the Bel550 reacts.

So, bottom line. They're both useful, but i reckon the Bel550 is more useful to Impreza owners.

cheers,
Terry

Terry,

I have the 550 but haven't come up against any radar yet as I received it recently and the police have gone quiet. Just my luck, as soon as I receive the detector the police dissapear and before I had it, they were out everyday.

How far before you got to the mini gatso did your detector go off?

Wrexy,

About 150 yards, which is more than enough time to react at urban speeds.

Can someone please give their own personnal views on this BEll 550.
As once I have sold My CLifford Concept 600 I want to buy a Radar.
This one is a little at of my price range but if it's as good as people say it may be worth the extra.
Also is delivery next day.

Question

Definetly interested ,possibly for two but have heard the Bell. 990 is the one to get ,seemingly best results in head to head test!
Can anyone comment on this ,is the 550
better value?

The 550 is the replacement for the 990, so should be marginally better

drive, the valentine is the expensive US detector, by all accounts works well, if memory serves about the same as a 990 in most tests, but due to excessive cost it is probably only worth while is you are going over there on holiday and take it back with you, as they are significantly cheaper out there.

I can hunt through my magazines and find the tests for you if you want, just let us know.

Cool

The Valentine one is supposed to be one of the best radar detectors around. Unfortunately it costs about £600 in the UK. You can pick one up in the States for $399, only problem being that it only available direct from the factory and they won't ship outside the US. I've asked one of my friends to get me one when he goes to the US in a couple of months.

For the full spec try

Robertio,
Thanks for the offer but I think my brother has a test on the different systems,I'll get him to dig it out .If the Val.1 is not significantly better, then the Bell.550 will do for me!

cheers Drive.
