Well, the subject line says it all, soon to need an MOT for my STi (first time)

Can anyone recommend somewhere reputable (ie. import friendly), I'm in the North Cheshire area but am willing to travel, or does it not really matter that much?

Also, does anyone know if my car will fail due to not having an airbag anymore (just some tape on the s/w covering the hole)

Thanks in advance
Simon

As far as I am aware Airbag systems - or lack of - are not part of an MOT inspection.

You shouldn't have any problems getting an MOT from any garage, unless your STI is a rust bucket..... and has a de-catted exhaust, then emissions will cause a few problems.

My MY00 flew through its MOT a few weeks back there was a serious recommendation though "Get out more and make the shiny bits underneath dirty ".

Emmissions wise it flew through with just the DP cat.

Does anybody know if it is also true that MOT emissions tests are less stringent for Jap Import therefore you can get away with a de-cat exhaust. I remember reading this a while back and would like to know if there is any truth to this.

Becareful about the brake tests though..

need to be done on a four wheel roller system or done in the car, but NOT on a two wheel roller..

I didn;t know this and mine was done on a 2wheel roller last year, thankfully no damage caused.

What happened to the airbag?

sorry to hijack the thread but I have an airbag related question too.
Will my Scooby fail an MOT if the "airbag" light is lit ?

Ah yes, glad you reminded me about the roller system, as the place I was thinking of does indeed have a 2-wheel system, MUST remember that

Oh, the airbag, hmmm....

Is that where it grounded out after going over the hump?

airbag went off in your face etc?

Lucky if that is all that happened?

Yep, scraped the underside of the car and put a small dent in the sump, luckily no damage was done that affects the geometry, I still had it all checked out on a laser rig just to be sure though. Pretty much superficial damage, thank goodness

For anyone that's interested, getting hit full on in the face by an airbag isn't quite the "hollywood" big cushion experience it looks like

If getting hit in the face isnt bad enough (causing numbness and skin abrasions), it deflates as quick as it inflates, filling the car with smoke and fibres, not the best when you're still have to stop the car

Ro, aparently, you can get a replacement "dummy" centre unit for the airbag which will extinguish the airbag light, although I haven't found anywhere that sells them yet!

Thanks for that - but my airbag is still in place & untouched - the light has just come on.
Diagnosis points to the Airbag ECU which will probably needs replacing....but my MOT is due tomorrow so I am not sure if it will fail for this ?

UXG: The rumor was that if a car wasn't listed in some data base then it would not have to pass the tests. However, the data base has since been refreshed, and now the only car not on it is the 22B import (I think), maybe the s201 isn't either....

I don't think there is a problem with using a 2 wheel roller for the brake test, after all thats what a centre diff is for, right?? If its in neutral then the rollers will freewheel the front wheels, when you just hit the brakes....

My airbag impact at about 100mph impact speed was not soft!

You could remove the bulb from the warning light although I think it probably far wiser to get a new bag from either a breakers (if they have any) or a dealer...

Either that or a piece of black tape to cover the light..

Thats what I thought Dan, but apparently it can over heat and damage the centre diff?!

Mine was front wheels in roller, brakes on, out, rear wheels in roller brakes on, out.. literally all of 5seconds to do whole brakes system..

people still say it was a no no.. but car still fine about 15k later...

takes your chances I guess...

I just won't risk it again..

Thought about the tape & the bulb !
If it needs a new ECU (probable) then its £80 for a second hand replacement from GradeA - plus fitting etc so works out quite expensive to fix.

If anyone knows how to get the bulb out then please let me know !!

its not the cost - its the fact that its gonna take 2-3 weeks to get the part & have it fitted....& my MOT is due tomorrow.
So I need a quick fix.
If it will pass with the light on then fine....if not then I don't want to drive around for 3 weeks with no MOT !
