I have a vague knowledge of Scoobies and need you help

I'm in the process of selling my Saxo VTS as i need something a little bigger. I'm looking for a car with low depreciation, decent build quality and performance, would a scooby match this criteria?
If so i have 6.5k to spend, what am i going to get for this sort of money? Now i understand there are differant versions of the turbo versions but what exactly are the differances? Thanks in advance.

Scooby's depreciate pretty badly unless you buy a limited edition one, such as the 22b or P1, but with 6.5k to spend you'd just about purchase the body kit for one of those (26k +)... you'll probably get an m or n plate for that but watch the mileage and check for smoke on cold starting. Just sold my W Reg for 14k... to give you an idea, have the sti7 on order..

You would be looking at a 1993/1994 model - there are some real sheds out there so look at plenty!!!

Have you catered for insurance with that? If not, ring around and get a quotation before setting your heart on one!

If you have to have an Impreza, why not start off with a Sport - £6k gets you a 3-4 year old car with FSSH and is just as much fun but less hard on insurance (especially if you are <25)
I have a MY00 Sport with 125 brake and thats plenty for me (for now ) and I don't mind not having the turbo (Insurance is £500 fully comp, clean licence, full NCB, 26 year old homeowner)
If you are into tunning/mods, then insurance will be fun on any car and there is not too much you can do to a Sport performance wise. DON'T buy a Sport to make it look like a turbo as you would be better off putting the cash you spend on mods into buying a turbo in the first place

Have you considered running costs? I came from a VTS to an Impreza and buying it is the easy part, whether I can afford to keep it on the road is a different ball game....fuel and servicing are joke expensive by comparison!

I dont wanna get a Sport as that would be less powerful than the car i have now, my vts has been tuned to 149bhp, which is quite a bit in a small car. I have already checked out insurance and thats not a problem. Looking in a couple of mags the fuel consumption figures dont look that bad, what sort of mpg are you guy getting on the motorway? My saxo does 65-70miles on a tenners worth, hows the scooby in comparision? Would'nt it be cheaper to do all the servicing yourself on a Scooby?

i dunno but the fact you say you car does 65-70 miles on a tenner is a bit worrying, do you only ever put a tenners worth in ?? and if it costs you £10 to do 70 miles then at 75p a litre for optimax thats 23mpg in a saxo ( you sure u dont have hole in your tank)
you could service yourself but kiss goodbye to the fsh and then to the resale value of your car.

the book consumption on yours is 34.9mpg and your saying that with an increase of 29bhp your consuption has gone down to 23mpg you must have some bloody huge injectors in your car to recuire the maping to be changed that much for such little gain. i could be wrong but hey to me it seems a bit freaky

I ran a 97 Impreza Turbo(now a modded Sti7), and always managed better than 23mpg (not now), so you shouldnt notice a huge difference. I would take someone with you who knows Imprezas when you look at them. Personally I have found them relatively inexpensive to run. I have never owned one out of some kind of warranty, that would worry me.
Brilliant car, but check out the insurance first - if you drive one you will want it, I would virtually guarantee that.
I would not buy an Impreza if I was doing a heavy mileage.

i wouldnt along with pretty much everyone else on here touch a scooby that hasnt had a dealer or speciallist service it fully...
Maybe you dont quite know how many problems you get with scoob's if you want to service it yourself but if your engine goes bang due to you doing something wrong then your going to have to lay out alot of cash for a new engine.....
Hmmmmm fuel consumption.... depends how you drive.... scoobs can be quite economical, but most of the time most people get about 200 miles out of a tank, ie 40 quids worth and thats for super normally and not u/l.....
2 services per year too, the most expensive being the 30 and 45k ones, all others are at 7.5k service intervals, the 30k will cost you near 400 quid, the 45 approx 500 quid, the others vary but can cost from 90 to 160+.
Insurance will rob you, most companies want tracking systems fitted, the proactive in most cases (the ones that activate when the car is moved) and not the passive ones.
Look at double everything you have on your saxo at the moment and your getting near to what your running costs are going to be.

If you're planning to keep the car for a good long while (5 years or so) then you can have a go at the servicing yourself. Be warned that it isn't the easiest car to work on, there's a lot to do and parts tend to be quite expensive. (Then there's mods to think about...)
I worked out (guessed at some figures ) that I would be spending somewhere between £500 and £1000 per year on dealer servicing my P reg UK Scoob. (15k miles per year, and no main dealer in my area)
5 years on, and that's going to be around the £4 to £5k mark.
Given what I paid for the car, I'm happy to not get it dealer serviced and lose resale money, as I'm not forking out quite large sums every 4 to 6 months. (I get to keep the money in the mortgage account and save on that )

Dogmaul, i'm only telling you what mine does regarding petrol, i would have no reason to lie, sure i can take it on the motorway and get 90miles per tenner, but no where near that around town. Thanks everyone for your help its been much appreciated, i have a couple more cars on my list, so will be finding a bit more about them first too. Once again thanks.

Filled my STi3 up yesterday, about £38 quid (SUL). Have done 214 miles and still have about 3/8 of a tank left. Pretty much motorway miles (70-80mph) with the occasional bit of welly.
Guess it will come out about 300 odd which works out at approx 80 miles for your tenner, no to shabby eh!

I brought my93 for £6500 but i was looking for a while and traveled 150 miles to get it. it looked good and was a good drive but has cost me so far £3500 ,gearbox ,waterpump, matrix, etc just maintaining standard parts. don't fall in the same trap as i did, if you can try and save a bit more.

ok, looks like the Scooby might not be what i'm loking for, although it has great performance, running cost and depreciation dose'nt seem to be in it favour. Now looking at a Newish bmw 325, might not have the same performance but depreciation and running cost are more suited to me, anybody else of any other suggestions?
