Got blown away @ the lights by MX-5!

Yup, huge embarassement by a fire spitting turbo-sounding Mazda MX-5 which added insult to injury by replying that he F****s Subarus when I asked him (laughing on top of my head) what the hell hes got under the bonnet! Enter any> 15 degrees curve i left him for dead though . Anyway not a bad day in total as i had a very good blast in seaside twisty with a Carrera 4 cabrio (badly driven as i was pulling away at the bends)

MX5's can be very fast with turbos etc. The Americans can tune them to produce really fast cars.
I would have thought that MX5s handle better than Scoobies though.
Thanks

yep - i was at a track day at donnington when the mx5 owners club rocked up. There were a fair few supercharged cars there that seemed to shift ok.
As there were so many mx5 owners I took the opportunity to get a number 2 back & sides and a trim on top
Is (or was) there a one-make series ? Maybe not in the UK, but i'm sure i remember reading about it.

There was an offical turbo option on the early MX5s.
BBR Im sure offered them.
HP wasnt huge, about 150ish I think, but then its a light car, so power to weight should be good for the traffic light GP.

Hehe - here in the states, that's not an unusual sight. There's a company called "Flying Miata" that makes kits all the way to 270 rwhp. Yes, that's 270 hp to the wheels.. Sport Compact Car magazine's miatas are both putting out 200 rwhp, with a great deal of room to grow..

I once got a ******* at the lights in an MX5 - sounds like my experience was more pleasurable than yours!
(Had the roof up at the time just in case you are wondering - not that much of an exhibitionist)

Stelio,
I think we'll have to get Hyper on to him. He wants to come here for a holiday, he has told me. Then we'll see if he f***s Subaru's. I wouldn't worry usually as fair is fair, but when the comment gets thrown, I will use all available resources to put them in their place.

Stelio,
I think there was a Le Mans edition of the MX-5 produced. They were orange in colour and turbo charged also (possibly by BBR - not sure)!
Perhaps this one had a similar conversion (?) I know my girlfriends MX-5 is very quick of the mark and its a standard 1.6i. Still wouldn't swap me Scoob for one tho!
Plus, if you had launched from somewhere around 3,500 - 4,000 rpm you'd have pasted him!
Later,
Kev

BBR turbo MX-5's were about 150bhp flywheel - a bit lame really. Basil's right about the Flyin Miata kits though - their FM2 is an easy 250 rwhp and about 260 ftlb, good for sub 5 sec to 60. Becoming quite popular over here now too. Quite a few guys in the US now pulling 300 rwhp from their Miatas (US MX-5). One guy is at just over 400rwhp - eats drivetrains for breakfast.
Supercharged MX-5's run from about 140 rwhp to about 200 rwhp depending on kit. Great low down pull though.

I have had the privelage to be sat in an FM2 turbo'd MX5 (eunos Roadster to be totally acurate) on a trackday at knockhill. The car in question belongs to Malcolm and is bright yellow. Some of the "competition" on the day included P1's Porsche's and Elises.
Two cars passed us in total, a P! and an Elise but both went straight on into the gravel as they were trying to out brake us, NOT out accelerate;-)
The car has about 250 bhp but Malcolm has also upgraded the Clutch/G-box/brakes/etc etc. He also has a set of VERY light wheels on it and stripped out some of the interior to make it lighter.
The Sebring Supercharger is a 5 hour bolt-on job but only gives about 40% increase in power (before any upgrades). Not too bad for around two thousand of your earth pounds.
I would like to try a set of HKS throttle bodies to my Roadster, just to be different, but it costs about the same as a Supercharger.
I still want a Scooby though :-(
Dave.

Just call me 'Mr Stamina!'
I seem to remember
Red
Amber
Green (and the sound of car horns)
Red, then Ahhhhhhhhhh and lost interest rolled over and fell asleep (old habits die hard)

Don't knock 'em. After over 3 happy years and 3 different Impreza's (MY95, MY2000, MY2001), a chum gave me a go of his MX5 a few weeks ago. I was hooked, and now own one of the little buggers (a Mk2 Jap import six speeder with LSD, not the drug). Improvements over MY2001 include:
1/ Steering. Pin sharp and accurate, loads of 'feel' (whatever that is). 100 times better than the woolly, over light Subaru.
2/ Gearchange. Done from the wrist. Touted by some as one of the all time road car greats, and they aren't wrong. Our works Transits have better shifts than an Impreza.
3/ Engineering. No rattles (from new my WRX rattled like a marble in a biscuit tin). Faultless paint finish. Leakproof (try pressure washing a Scoob around the windows. You get runs on the inside. Amazingly, this doesn't happen with the Mazda).
4/ Costs. Insurance 50% cheaper. Tyres 35% cheaper. 275 miles to £31 of NUL (as opposed to 220 miles to £46 of SUL) Servicing the same, parts probably ditto.
5/ Oversteer. Say no more.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it is a better car. I loved my Scooby's. But I loved them because they were so capable at everything. I love the Maz like my old 205 1.9: because it is FUN. And fun can be had at 25mph at any deserted wet roundabout: some may argue the point, but serious law breaking had to be done before I really started enjoying a Subaru.
I nearly bought an Elise. But for the price, I can keep my Mazda and buy a good early WRX. If I could afford the insurance.
Downside is my work colleagues now call me Ken. As in Barbie's bloody boyfriend.

At 250 whp they do 0-60 in the hi 4's. My 2000 MX-5 does 0-57 (top of 2nd gear) in 5.1 s, according to datalogs, at just 7 psi, stock motor, street tires, and 218 whp on a dynojet (double of stock hp).
Miatas do handle very well, but of course powering out of corners AWD has an advantage.
But before we go into a "mine is bigger than yours" argument.. I too am a fan of Scoobies, but regrettably I can't afford a 2nd car.

Girls like 'em. The nice looking bird at the bank asked me to take her out it last week. This would NEVER have happened in the Scooby.
Nothing to do with me either, I'm as ugly as a spud. Maybe its the jiggly ride on the Bilsteins?
Paul: was she driving?

At the moment I am still one of the people in Europe owning a FM-turbo-ed 91 BRG MX-5.
It's a bloody quick and nice car to drive. A very nice sleeper car, that has suprised many. The kit includes a LINK ECU.
Figures presented here on the BBS are US hp figures. Take them with a grain of salt. The 215 bhp scooby here is 227 hp there. Ín Europe we never see the same dyno figures as they in the US do. If I compare it to the MY99 scooby I also own it feels less quick on the low rev range (less torque: 1.6 vs 2.0 engine), but on the high rpm it's a different story. The MX-5 keeps pulling and pulling towards the rev line, whereas the scooby losses power after 5.000 rpm.
But I just put it up for sale to replace it with a Lancer EVO VI RS2. So now I can compare EVO vs 555.
