Hi
I'm new to this forum.
I have just bought a 1.8 Turbo impreza, but my friend says it is not a turbo because it doesn't have a boost gauge.
When i accelerate it makes a noise, and you can feel the turbo power, but there is no guage on the dashboard.
can anyone help me.

Easy way to find out....
1.. Go 4 a blast
2.. Open your bonnet
3.. At the top of your exhaust down pipe,there is a rusty looking cast iron thingie.
4.. Put your hand on it.
5.. If your hand sticks to it,youve got a Turbo charger
If your friend doesnt believe you tell him to put his hand on it too!

1.8 is the bigger question. A few (and I mean literally a few) got registered as 1.8GLs but were in fact 2 litre turbos - see the SIDC FAQ for more info on this.

It does not have a bonnet scoop. It does not have any badges on it.
by the top of my engine i have a black box with turbo in white writing written on it, it looks like it's made of plastic though. I'm not really sure what it is.
i will try and get a picture later on today.

I have emailed the person i have bought my car off. I don't think it is a car that subaru has built.
I have looked at the logbook and it does say 1.8GL, is this what subaru register them as if they are tuned up?

The 1.8GL came from the fact tha DVLA hadnt got the Japanese models so they choose what they thought was the closest . Mine after 2 goes says Impreza Turbo WRX.
If it aint got a scoop its unlikely to have a top mounted intercooler. Which means it either has FMIC or its a non turbo 1.8GL.
The only 1.8 turbo were the XT coupe I think (like the one in the cannonball run that Jackie Chan drove). The boost gauge thing there were a few but 99% of impreza dont have them as standard. Have a look at the VIN plate under the bonnet and it shoudl have a model code then check this against the model codes listed in teh SIDC faq www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm that will tell you if its a grey import turbo.

I can't find anything on the faq you said.
It is not a japanese car, it is english as it came from a dealer.
it does not have a scoop and it does not have the big spotlamps on the front. it is a N reg.

If its debadged how do you know its an impreza. Sure its not a 1.1 GTa Metro
You must be taking the p*ss m8. I sure as hell would'nt buy a motor without knowing exactly what it is.
Thats why I waited until I could get an original Subaru Celica Turbo Rolex Intercooler. The guy assured me there were only a few made.
