Question

A colleague is looking for a 5 door MY99 and has asked if I would go along to view cars with him. I have a MY98 but are there any common problems with a MY99 I should look for?

One's I can think of (MY99's had all these things, although all done under warranty so I'm not complaining )

Clutch judder (new clutch)
Scratched windows (new windows)
MAF failure (new MAF)
Front disc's crack/warped (New disc's and pads)
Idle speed sensor (new sensor)
Lamba Sensor (new sensor)
Clicking clutch pedal (new pedal box)

Apart from that, no common problems

oh, piston slap?? (or was that only MY98's??)

Yer I think piston slap was on both MY98 and MY99. Make sure theres an invoice for the work, the problem usally occures after 10/20k.
Cheers.

I'm pretty sure piston slap was not a problem on MY99 cars thanks to the introduction of the 'Phase 2' boxer engine.

For certain, none of the MY99 Turbos on our company fleet have had a problem with piston slap (8 of them). In contrast, all of the MY97/98 cars have suffered from the problem (6 of them).

All were sorted out under warranty.

Andy.

Piston slap on:

late MY97 and MY98 cars. Not an issue on MY99 UK cars.

PTMW! is 40K old

Warranty items have been...

F/N/S wheel bearing - too fast through roundabouts?

Collapsed O/S/F electric window mechanism.

Couple of very minor trim problems.

Other than that, been absolutely spot on

Front side window scratches...replaced glass and pads under warranty.

Dont use front windows now, have removed rear seats so that I can 'flick' ash on the floor in the back

Moles Dad,

How did ya manage that - my back windows are scratched and Mill Lane (good fob off merchants I must admit ) categorically refused to replace glass or do anything about it under warranty saying glass was not and never had been covered..........

ScoobyJawa, I believe the 'scratched window' problem IS a well known prob with dealers.

When I first got mine I remember reading (on here) about it!

And after about 9 months I also had this problem

Go back to your dealer and tell them that you have spoken to IM and that it should be looked at under warranty!!!

Also make sure you get the 'felt pads' replaced or it will be a re-visit after 3 months (like me).

Does that help?
