Doc 23 July 2002 08:36 AM

A colleague is looking for a 5 door MY99 and has asked if I would go along to view cars with him. I have a MY98 but are there any common problems with a MY99 I should look for?

mega_stream 23 July 2002 08:42 AM

One's I can think of (MY99's had all these things, although all done under warranty so I'm not complaining :) )

Clutch judder (new clutch)
Scratched windows (new windows)
MAF failure (new MAF)
Front disc's crack/warped (New disc's and pads)
Idle speed sensor (new sensor)
Lamba Sensor (new sensor)
Clicking clutch pedal (new pedal box)

Apart from that, no common problems

oh, piston slap?? (or was that only MY98's??)

HELLOM8 23 July 2002 08:53 AM

Yer I think piston slap was on both MY98 and MY99. Make sure theres an invoice for the work, the problem usally occures after 10/20k.
Cheers.
Ian.

The SIDC faq may help?

I'm pretty sure piston slap was not a problem on MY99 cars thanks to the introduction of the 'Phase 2' boxer engine.

For certain, none of the MY99 Turbos on our company fleet have had a problem with piston slap (8 of them). In contrast, all of the MY97/98 cars have suffered from the problem (6 of them).

All were sorted out under warranty.

Andy.

Piston slap on:

late MY97 and MY98 cars. Not an issue on MY99 UK cars.

PTMW! is 40K old :)

Warranty items have been...

F/N/S wheel bearing - too fast through roundabouts? ;)

Collapsed O/S/F electric window mechanism.

Couple of very minor trim problems.

Other than that, been absolutely spot on :D

:)

MY99 UK:

New clutch (27,000 - Warranty)
MAF sensor (34,000 - Warranty)
Cracked heatsheild (34,000 - Warranty)

ScoobyJawa 23 July 2002 02:21 PM

Since owning the car only prob has been corroded rear brake discs, replaced under warranty.

ChrisB 23 July 2002 02:23 PM

MY99 UK with 56k miles...

Nothing replaced under warranty :)

kenb@manx 23 July 2002 02:27 PM

Problems? Don't fcuk your knee, get your leg in plaster from toe to thigh so you can't drive the thing. Other than this mine is great ! :)

Moles Dad 23 July 2002 03:18 PM

Front side window scratches...replaced glass and pads under warranty.

Dont use front windows now, have removed rear seats so that I can 'flick' ash on the floor in the back :D :D :D

ScoobyJawa 23 July 2002 03:33 PM

Moles Dad,

How did ya manage that - my back windows are scratched and Mill Lane (good fob off merchants I must admit:rolleyes: ) categorically refused to replace glass or do anything about it under warranty saying glass was not and never had been covered..........

JUSTINLP 23 July 2002 03:39 PM

Hi all,
i have a 1999 and Subaru in Isleworth wouldnt replace my clutch or windows under warranty, they said they would give me 20% discount as im in the trade???

Moles Dad 23 July 2002 03:45 PM

ScoobyJawa, I believe the 'scratched window' problem IS a well known prob with dealers.

When I first got mine I remember reading (on here) about it!

And after about 9 months I also had this problem :(

Go back to your dealer and tell them that you have spoken to IM and that it should be looked at under warranty!!!

Also make sure you get the 'felt pads' replaced or it will be a re-visit after 3 months (like me).

Does that help?
