99 S Impreza WRX STi version 5
Cool Grey Impreza WRX STi version 5, 30,000 mile full service history, stereo, cat one alarm, STi crimson / grey interior

Price: £16,495.00

Now this isnt a type r but this is the sort of price you should be looking in the region of for a dealer, private may be upto 1k less but have seen some for 14k in the autotrader.
Be aware that what you buy may not be exactly what you want! (ie its been run on unleaded fuel etc and serving hasnt been up to much) also look out for crashed repaired that havnt had a good job done to them and HPI is a must!

M,
95 ron fuel will cause detination in your engine, totally knackering your pistons very quickly
Most people will run optimax or super unleaded with octane booster or you could go and get your car remapped but it may be quite expensive as in most cases a new ecu is needed (GEMS, Link etc) but thats probably the better way to go (and a little more power to boot ) or get hold of a P1 ecu, this ecu is set to run 97 ron fuel (dont try running 95 on this as it will also knacker your engine up ) but you wont get any det with it
Try subaru breakers (no numbers to hand for any but post in general and hopefully something will come up )
Unfortunately fuel is the biggest down side to high performance jap cars, and also you may get a type r with no abs and centre mechanical diff control, dont play with it until you learn how to handle the car as it can be a little twitchy in some positions!

Oh,
Pro sport in Didsbury will service your car, they are an independant speciallist as no uk dealer will touch jap imports (unless they have been to prodrive then given the all clear by IM) but i think there are only 3 Version 6 type r's sold this way (and a few P1 prototypes).

sorry to jump in on this but i am also after some advise i have a ver6 type r running on optimax after sul but even after an ecu reset it still nearly cuts out when cold.I am very worried about damaging the engine as i have read someone paying £8500 for a new sti engine from japan as regards prices these cars attain a prenium over other impreza's apart from the 22b this is the ultimate impreza i would not part with mine for anything less than £19,0000 mine was one of the last two old model type r's imported into the uk by litchfield imports from cyprus in nov 2000

No service history is a dodgy move on a scoob, you want to look at www.warrender.co.uk or www.litimports and even www.park-lane.co.uk but dont touch a scoob with no service history.
Pro sport are just off from stockport east junc (the pyramid) just off station road if i remember, its an industrial complex and they are meant to be quite highly regarded.

Jab,
i own a uk car so dunno about this problem
You could ask John Felstead as he now has an STi V5 type RA V-ltd but i know he runs his scoob on optimax and octane booster.

Some may disagree but the 4 door Sti V5 is better than the coupe.
(see old EVO mag reviews). I'd rather buy the 4 door, coupes
are a pain especially when u have people in the back. Plus ventilation in the back is relatively poor.

HI TONY,
ITS INTERESTING THAT YOU MENTION WARRENDER.CO BECAUSE THE CAR
WAS IMPORTED BY THEM TO THE LAST OWNER .
DO YOU THINK ITS WORTH GETTING PRO SPORT TO INSPECT THE CAR?

Have a 99 T sti v5 type R ,2 door, met grey, 28000 miles, full service history, part subaru SH, checked by the AA, no modifications made to it, always run on optimax. Cat one alarm, and Trackstar tracker. Variable centre diff, no ABS, aircon with climate control (factory extra I think). Just been up to power engineering and had a full geometry check up, (all ok) and a test on their rolling road, (again all ok with a 280bhp figure)and they put their subaru select monitor on it and all ECU readings were on the button. Email me an offer and I will think about it!

PS, When buying a car as highly tuned as the STI V5 Type R walk away from anything remotly dodgy, especially the one with no service history. Don`t let the fact that you want one badly go to your head, the old saying buy in haste regret at will is definately the case, good luck!

dont disregard the car for no service history if it's been reposesed! It should be cheeper than that though, much cheeper!

Good luck finding an STi5 TypeRA (4 door), they are far less available than the 2 door typeR.

The main diference between TypeR/RA and normal STi5's is the geering is lower (faster accell), they have a centre diff control, bigger rear diff, 2 pot brakes on the rear. etc etc.

As to fuel, use SUL or optimax plus an octane booster and have it checked for det when running this fuel. These cars are superb, very much a drivers car, you can do things with them you would find very dificult to do in any other Impreza.

If you want any more info drop me a mail.

As standard the only sti that pushed over 276bhp in its original form is the type RA V-ltd (according to sidc) and all other sti's pushed 276bhp.
Id still give the repro a miss, if i knew it was going back to be repossessed id rag the *** off it and do handbrake turns etc as you wouldnt really care would you (but i wouldnt do that anyway but some would!)
There are plenty of good sti's out there, you just have to look for em, dont buy the first one you come across cos its cheap, it could be a right dog and cost you an arm and a leg.

I dont believe the sidc faq.

all imprezas produced a max of 276bhp (280ps) from the factory due to gentlemens agreement.

Not convinced by the bolder claims.

I used to prefer the 4 door handling but have changed my mind too.

especially after seeing mr. felstead powersliding all the way round the melbourne loop at donington.

It reminded me of W9 GTR's comment.

"Imprezas were not designed for the track! wait till you get to the melbourne loop and try to go round. Understeer city!"

hmmmm. not so it would appear. (still not a track car though- I agree on that!)

Ive had a STi5 - R for nearly a year now, excellent drivers car but as rare as hens teeth to find, I think that more people are hanging on to these "classics" especially as the new STi dosent come near in terms of raw performance.
good luck in your quest

The only production model Impreza that left the factory with 300PS was the S201, which was fitted with a revised STi sports ECU that allowed an improved turbo to produce more boost whilest minimising lag and it was also fitted with a different exhaust with a 120mm tailpipe. It also produced the same torque figure of 260lb ft @ 4000 rpm of the Version IV-VI STi's with the 22B having produced 265lb ft @ 3,200 rpm due to its extra cubic capacity.

The S201 was based on the STi Version VI type RA. It came with the highest power to weight ratio of any Impreza produced, with it being 235PS per tonne. Only 300 of these cars where produced and they where fitted with a special numbered S201 plauqe.

As far as other Imprezas being supplied with 300PS, I was led to believe that classic STi VI cars sourced from Cyprus had modifications done to them by the Subaru supplier in Cyprus to obtain this higher power figure. Maybe the same ECU as found in the S201 was used?

ian

JABRONI, where did u get the fact that the sti type R has "over 300 bhp" standard?

Its the same engine as the P1 which has 276, and as i understand the same CAT arrangement, so how can it have more power?

I used to have an sti5 typeR and in my circumstance the P1 i px'd the sti for was well worth the extra money.

As regards the price for the P1 being over inflated, the price of anything is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. Must be a 1000 mugs driving about then
