lifted from the Trend website
This hoax warns against a virus contained in a file called SULFNBK.EXE, that arrives hidden in an email message.
SULFNBK.EXE is a Windows System file that is installed in the Windows Command folder when the Windows Operating System is installed. Therefore, the presence of this file does not necessarily mean a system is infected.
SULFNBK.EXE is a utility used to restore long file names on the Start menu, when it is replaced with MS-DOS-compatible (short) file names in 8.3 format. For example, the Accessories folder on the Start menu may be displayed as "Access~1" if the SULFNBK utility is not installed.
This file is not destructive or malicious, but it can be infected with a virus and could be mass mailed. The virus PE_MAGISTR.A. is capable of using the SULFNBK.EXE file to propagate. If you receive an email with the attachment SULFNBK.EXE there is a possibility that the file is infected. Trend Micro recommends that you scan your system with HouseCall, Trend Micro's free online virus scanner.
If you receive an email without an attachment Trend Micro requests that email users delete the message.

Come on, it's a hoax. What do you mean you "dare" people to open it?
Install a fresh copy of Win95. Ohmigod you've got the virus!
These virus hoaxes are actually virulent, but benign, themselves.
It's always worth checking the symantec (or wherever you like) website before posting these things.

Even if not active (and this _is_ a hoax) it would be a virus now, just with a delayed payload.
The malicious code would still be there now, which would mean any antivirus program could find it now and report it (assuming its up to date - you DO update your antivirus software regularly, don't you?!).
This one is a little more clever than most as that file IS one that a different virus targets specificially.
Check out the link Ian posted above - anytime you get a warning, I'd suggest you got to

BUDA,
ask your friend to boot his PC at 00:01 local (UAE) time and see if the so-called virus activates. I very much doubt it, but if it does, get him/her to post a reply here and give us a couple of hours notice due to the time difference!!!
Bit of a wasted effort though, for a well known hoax! Who is the "large IT company" - i need to make sure that i avoid them?
Dare at midnight - my ****!

It is not a virus but a windows utility program
I've copied the following from my company's website so you can see what it actually does.
-------------------------------------------
After you uninstall Windows 98, the long file names on the Start menu may be replaced with MS-DOS-compatible (short) file names in 8.3 format. For example, the Accessories folder on the Start menu may be displayed as Access~1.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Windows 98 uninstall procedure did not finish successfully.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the Sulfnbk.exe utility to restore your long file names.
-------------------------------------

BUDA,
Have you just gone quiet because you are feeling sheepish this morning, or has the entire IT infrastructure of your country bitten the bullet?
Adam,
Living in a Hose, now that would be a dream compared to the old tatty shoe box that me and my 25 siblings grew up in... we used to DREAM that one day we might be able to afford a downpayment on a Hose of our own...

I cant believe so many people keep taking the bait on stuff like this before properly researching it. I had the same yesterday a top line exec phoned one of my comp's execs who told ...who then told..
Before I knew it people were deleting files left right and centre and the emails being forwarded were a joke.
As always consult a reputable site before jumping. If you have access to the web check it out and to be honest who these days opens up "exe's" via email without checking or confirming the file is from a reliable source.
Anyway all this is simply my view on the matter as yesterday I had about 50 pc's to fix because semi-intelligent PC users acted on an unconfirmed report.
ps Did you hear about the new virus you can get which is only activated when you type "SCOOBY" in your keyboard, when activated you bank balance depreciates drastically
Cheers everyone
Jase

Pauls top Virus tip :-
If an email says , "please pass this on to ALL of your friends IMMEDIATLY" its a hoax
and as jase said, check one of the big anti virus companies websites before posting/emailing friends/taking action.
I've been "warned" about so many viruses off BBS's and emails, and they were ALL hoaxes.

This is one pain in the butt 'HOAX'. What's notable is the self inflicted payload. I've just spoken with the BBC, a top exec from an e-commerce org. just mailed every journo he had in his address book to warn them, big mistake.

It seems to me that normally intelligent people lose all common sense when you sit them down in front a PC.....
I love it when stuff like this happens, makes working here so worthwhile
