0 -60 times!!!
#1
I'm sure this has been discussed a million times but I'm new to scoobynet and would really appreciate your opinions........
Why oh why do you see such massively varying 0-60 times quoted for the same car. Recently I have seen, in apparently respectable car mags, the Evo FQ300 having 0-60 times ranging from
4 secs to 5.4 secs! And the Type UK ranging from 4.9 to 5.9.
Even allowing for different cars on different surfaces with different weather conditions etc, etc, this seems a bit extreme('scuse the pun).
Why?

Try it yourself and see how consistent your figures are - mine certainly aren't and I don't want to practice a lot so I have a cluch and gearbox left.
I only know one person whose 1/4 mile times are often within 1% of each other and I am not going to embarras him

I just cant follow the second hand on my watch and change gear at the same time.....0-60 must be one of the most irrelevant performance indicators around, so why even bother trying to measure it. 1/4, and 0-100 is much more meaningful.

I think 0-60 times meant more some years back, when a quick car was 9 or 10 seconds. 0-100 is probably a better measure nowadays
Just remember, when your speedo reads 100, you are probably doing nearer 90 !!! That's why most people think they can beat the manufacturers times

The best figures are the 30-70 throught the gears.
0-100 is better than 0-60 but still not truly representative as it relies on a good start. Most real world performance situations are from 'rolling starts' anyway so while 1 car may have a better 0-60 (or 100) than another car, the other car may have a better 30-70 & thus be, in real world situatiosn, a faster car.

I agree - you also find that a good measure of real performance is comparing the 30-70 and 0-60 times directly.
eg 99MY (Autocar example) 5.7 and 5.6 respectively. Shows that the car sprints well in gear and from a standing start.

excuse me being silly here but whats the point in measuring 0-100 times in this country? you can't go that fast legally. 0-60 is actually a good measure I think of how quick you can get out of turnings, laybys etc on national speed limit roads etc. Quarter mile times are pretty pointless too but they are fun to do

Quoting autocar as well(to keep it objective), my Corrado VR6 has a 0-60 in 6.4 which is slower than a scoob obviously but the 30-70 is 5.7 which is near on identical to flat 4x4's 30-70 figure (i assume that's for a uk turbo, not a wrx or sti etc.) so on the road there'd probably be hardly any difference although if you looked at the 0-60 only you'd think the scoob is a lot faster.
BTW, this is not a Corrado vs Scoob post so no immature 'the scoob is better round twisties, rather have this or that blah blah blah etc'. I'm merely pointing out the often irrelevant 0-60 which normally only illustrates how low geared & how much traction you have from standstill.

Dracoro
(Yes Figs for std 99MY)
This is exactly my point as I remember having great 'debates' on the Evo forum over my previous chipped diesel (185bhp/285lb/ft) which kept up with a lower spec Porsche Boxster on the road, despite the 0-60 being a second quicker - and this was despite the diesel needing more gear changes.
VR6 Corrado - much under-rated IMHO

0-60 times ARE important (in my opinion) because I know what to/what not to try to burn at the lights.
Killed a supra (NA) last night at the lights - he was not a happy chappy (prob cos he was with his bird)
