I would stick to 97 Ron with the P1 if you can, but it can run on 95 Ron with a performance loss.
My last MY00 gave 200-220 miles per tank about 50 lts.
My P1 is giving 280-300 miles per tank about 50 lts.
I have not give the P1 any welly yet and would expect the fuel consumption to drop but I could not get these figs from my MY00 no matter how I drove.

Took a MY01 WRX out for a long blast yesterday for second time just to confirm I really do want one, and yes I still like it.
Problem is, afterwards took a P1 out for an hour or so and it has changed my perspective completely. Awesome. Im now desperately trying to justify that I can afford one and it is a *sensible* purchase. Im OK with the finance and insurance just about.
The question is what realistic mpg am I likely to get? . Mostly urban and local travel, with the occasional motorway journey and pressing of the loud pedal wherever legally possible Is 20mpg realistic?, and is it true the P1 only requires NUL?
Im also worried about leaving it parked anywhere, whereas the MY01 is so ugly no one would look at it!
Also, any ideas on residuals in 3 years time?

Around town I'm getting roughly 20 mpg, and on the motorway about 28 mpg..... so I should imagine you should average 25mpg depending on how much you like the loud pedal
I agree with Bob, I'd try to stick the SUL, although it can take NUL..
Residuals in 3 years time - who knows ?? Just get one and enjoy it

I'm in exactly the same position.....been offered two great deals to change from my 99V Turbo to a P1.....can't make my mind up because P1 values are coming down now, encouraged by the new UK 300(on sale now) and the forthcoming WRX Sti.......the worry factor is uppermost in my thoughts, and the notion that I'm just being plain daft to contemplate getting rid of an already great car for a car which, in the real world, is not really that different, is also bugging me! Oh, and the well-documented paint and stone-chipping problems remain a major concern.....£31495 for a car that looks a mess after 6000 miles is pretty hard to justify....I know........I'm trying right now!
A friend in the trade has told me that a P1 would be worth about £24000 tops on the private market after three years, so......
You pays your money, you takes your choice!

DBM, A P1 after 3 years is more likely to be worth £14k not £24k, under 1 year old models are advertised from £25k and though values may firm up a little now as the new ones run out.

I am sure it is a great car (which I will buy in a couple of years when I can afford it), but Subaru residuals are nothing special.

Well so far that sounds not to bad. Ive been offered an ex-demo with a few hundred miles on it for substantially less that £31495, a little more than a PPPd UK300 so it seems not a bad deal.
I cant beleive a 3 year old would fetch £24000 even though I would like to! I was expecting it to be below £20.
I am going to ponder it over the next few weeks I think, as I change my mind every few hours at the moment

same problem here, i went to buy a rb5 wr sport a fortnight ago and whilst i was there i test drove the p1 as well, i picked it up last week, so far averaging 23.5 mpg, back and fore from work, cruising at 90 on the motorway and some blats around the lanes on sul, i bought a y plate ex demo with 1800 miles for £28500

You guys are lucky that cars such as the P1 are available in the UK. If the P1 was available here I'd be buying it instead of having my modded MY00 and worrying about reliability. The P1 has the power, handling and reliability and is also a collectors item. If you have the money go for it. Well that is my opinion anyway. Good luck.

The Fuel thing worries me cos im a soon to be ex-company car driver who is used to a piece of plastic from the company providing free fuel...
The thought of paying for my own fuel for 1000 private miles a month on SUL @ 20mpg is a sobering one, and im hoping the smile on my face driving a P1 will still be there after 2/3 years to make it worthwhile

Hi Mark,

Would be very interested in a road test of a PPP MY01 vs a P1. Pete C seems to think the MY01 is a better car than the MY00, hence adding PPP are you getting a better car than a P1? Maybe get a suspension mod on the MY01 as well as PPP, and it get's interesting!

Anyone know if any of the press have got hold of a uk300+ppp for a road test (maybe evo?) I would like to see what they said before I put my hard earned stuff down on a P1???

Remember, they are having a **** time trying to offload only 1000 P1's - they have been trying for, what? 12 months now? Ford and Vauxhall shift this number of Focus's and Vectra's month in, month out - so DO NOT pay what the dealer wants, make an offer and leave your phone number, he'll ring back - he has got to - there are only 1000 idiots out there and they havent found them all yet!!

Buy an RB5 and get proper value for money!

1000 miles a month equates to about £200.

The P1 is nice but having driven imports, if you are concerned about costs, dont go english.

You would be much better off buying an sti 5 type r with a quick rack as this makes the P1 feel crap by comparison.

These cars are now available for well under 20k, which is by comparison an absolute bargain.

I am not sure I agree with pete c on the greatness of the new car although I havent driven one yet.

Too ugly to bother. Plus it weighs more (all at the front) with the same power output. The eqauls less performance and more understeer.

Its your choice, but it would be a mistake to ignore the imports. I would also think it would be a foolish move to buy a P1 and run it on nul.

Mpg is high 20s on the motorway, down to about 15 if you red line it constantly down twisty roads. I usually get about 250-260 miles from a tank, which is a little over 20mpg. I wouldn't get one if you have to park it on the street, they attract a lot of attention. Residuals - used examples 1 year old are selling for about 25-26, and I would expect them to be worth about 20-21k in 12 months time, 16-17k in 2 years, but after that I think that good condition ones shouldn't go much lower than 15k. It's a limited edition of an excellent car, and I don't see them selling for less than cars like the Escort Cossie or Integrale which are slower, less reliable and much older. If you buy one of the remaining "new" ones, don't pay list, I'd try to get about 27-28k. If you buy used, make sure the owner treats the car nicely on the test drive (i.e. letting it warm up before using the turbo, etc), a car which has had frequent oil changes (e.g. avg once every 5000 miles) is likely to have been looked after better.

Dont listen to Adam he talking crap. As Steve points out the Type R has the same steering as the P1. Also to claim the WRX understeers more without driving it is crap. Every write up Ive read says it doesnt.

Ive owned an STI V and P1 and had a couple of long drives in the new WRX. At present I'm in the same situation as yourself. I can get shot of my car in a couple of weeks and get another Scooby.

If you couldnt get the WRX with a PPP then go for the P1. With the PPP I'm not as sure. UK cars with PPP have always been pretty equal with STI's/P1's. Their smaller turbo making it more driveable in day to day conditions. The UK300 with PPP has a little more torque than a P1. If Subaru's brochure claim of a 25% reduction between 30 & 70 is correct, then the UK300 will crack the 5 second barrier. In real world driving I would guess the UK300 will stay in touch with the P1. The P1 will be more raw, looks the dogs etc, but its now the old shape and IMHO starting to look it. I saw the UK300 parked next to a few P1's and I know which looked more modern. The UK300 is a little expensive, by about £1000, but my guess is it will do quite well come resell time. It really needs a drive before you decide.

Just to compare resale, back in OZ in 1988 Holden (Opel to you and Chevrolet in the States) built the Commodore VL HSV Group A. 750 were made. They could not sell and it took till 1991 to sell the last. Second hand values did drop in the first 5 years, but then they started to climb again as they got scarce. Obviously how immaculate and how many miles played a role. They are however still going higher in price. They sold about 16,000 pounds brand new, dropped to 9,000 pounds and went up to around 12,000 just before I left a year ago. Doesn't mean the same thing will happen in the UK but it could.
