Hi all,
I am looking for a 'fun car' for the summer, an Escort Cabriolet of more than 10 years old would foot the bill perfectly.
It needs to be 10 years plus to get classic car insurance on it!!
Anyway, I have a devil of a job finding a decent one, there are 179 within 20 miles of me for sale!! BUT I am a bit fussy and want a Mint one - it MUST exsist!!
Has anyone seen one or any knowledge of one? would want it in the Reading/Basingstoke/Newbury Area please??
Pete

...so, by 'fun car', you mean fun for the spectators, rather than the driver??

You are not taking this at all seriously are you??
The reason I ask is that my mate has just bought one, G plate, 1989, mint, 43,000miles, Ok I KNOW its a tarts car - but it was £1800 for gods sake!! thats one summer of fun and throw it in the bin kinda dosh isnt it??
PLUS if I do 3000miles in it over the summer I will save £100 in petrol over using the Scoobie!! AND keep the scoobie miles down a little - cant lose can ya?????
Go on, look in your neighbours garage and tell me if you find one!!

Just work this out:-
Scooby = 17mpg = 3000miles = £625
Cabriolet = 30mpg = 3000miles = £354
Classic Insurance = £171
6 Months Car Tax = £95
Service DIY = £50
So, the running costs for the summer sun fun is a grand total of £45!!!! buy sensibly and sell next spring for the same money and it has cost you practically NOTHING - how much cheaper can open-air motoring come??
If you dont care looking like a tart and enjoy yourself then no-one loses!! RESULT!!

With such cheap running costs, why not buy the hard top XR3 and DIY-it into a convertible!?
I presume you'll only drive it when the sun is out, so you won't miss the convertible lid...bargain.

Why not get a caterham for the summer?
they exist at 5 to 6k are even cheaper to run, still attract classic car insurance, have much more street cred, have rock solid second hand values, and go like stink.
downside, a bit leaky! bugger, but you are only buying it for summer.
PS. if 5k is throwaway money, then I am a dustbin!

VW Golf cab is a better car IMHO
Will be more £'s than a 'scort cab and more chance of finding an unmolested golf cab
How about an MR2 T bar
we sold our '88 mint one for £ 2400.00 this time last year
It's quicker, handles better and is built better than an Ford/VW
fuel economy about 28mpg
Jenny paid £ 450 Fully comp (for us both) on a 3K limited miles policy
Much more secure and a lot less chance of having it knicked or the hood slashed and it is not a 'tarts' car (or a hairdressers!)
135mph and 0-60 in 7.8 secs is respectable
Parts are about the same £ as VW
Buy right and you should get your money back
We paid £ 2750 for ours four years ago, only had a service, exhaust, tyres and battery in three years.

Thanks all but it needs to be a 4 seater!!
Yes the scoob is a fun car - but sadly it has a roof!!
Anyone know what I should look for on a Golf Gti Convertible of 1987 vintage?? Anyone care to hazard a guess at the price?? 96,000miles so just run-in

Pete,
if you really want an XR3 cabrio, just look in your local yellow pages under Hairdressers and get phoning round, you're bound to turn something up and you might make a few new friends as well

Yeah ok
I asked a friend how to make an Escort Cab look more butch? she said, simply .....
...........PUT YOU IN IT!!
So? if you feel lucky you could come down here and call me a hairdressers tart if you like - one request, pre-book the hospital bed and call the ambulance beforehand!! - you are going to look awfully stupid with a Hairdryer sticking out your 4rse!!

Mate of mine turned up in his Mums one last week on a really sunny day. I thought, I dont believe the ***** he has got to expect me to go cruising up the pub in that thing. Actually, snobbery aside, it was a top Motor. Totally standard and had a wicked joystick for directing the sounds to the speakers. Now that was clever.
Get one, they rock.
Im thinking of getting a CRX V-tech with a moon roof for ****s and giggles this summer.
