Default Help with ticking noise before I purchase

Hi all,

I’ve reserved a vehicle (JDM Impreza Sti 06) now it has low miles and a good service history. It’s just been imported from Japan and I’ll be the 1st uk owner. Now on the advert video I can hear a ticking sound (doesn’t sound like a knock or piston slap) some have listened and said it sounds like a worn timing belt or it’s just the Subaru tick and it’s normal. The car is this one and if you guys could listen to the engine (you can hear it at the beginning and the end when they open the bonnet) for me and give your opinions it would be much appreciated as I want to seal a deal with the car asap. Video below on advert

ok I just i seen a video
i had a noise from ac tensioner but noise on advert is nowhere near to my.
Looks like bottom end gone
Do not be silly for that price, i would not pay 10k for it ,max 8k
i have seen an advert for spec c ra blobeye in white with rebuild forged engine, lm450 turbo and other goodies for 22k
27k its spec c ra hawk money or buy evo x fq360 510 horses on pistonheads for 29k
i paid below 12k for 56k miles hawk few years back with new alcon race 365mm brake kit ,coilovers, new lph 340 fuel pump ,new alloys with new tyres, deffis, spec c roof flap, fresh map ,3" exhaust , sway bars, drop, links,ht autos sills sides extensions, hardrace engine and gearbox mounts, etc
Yes my car now has an issue with overfuelling or oil goes thru seals -black spots on the spoiler ,boot bumper etc but even if i rebuild it it will not be worth 27k with way better spec

It needs to be revved and allowed to drop back to idle......then you'll know by the death rattle. Doesn't sound good.
I didn't look at price and mileage.

The bottom end is a rattle on revs , so as above give it a test when it’s cold , my forged engine has a similar noise with no issues , ticking can be the little puller tensioner on the alternator belt at the front or an exhaust leak , the bottom end failing is a pretty clear rattle like a dddddd 😂 if that makes sense , not impossible on a 2 litre but not as likely on the that mileage unless it’s not looked after and oil was low or a crap re map , all jdm scoobies cars i have had have not been mapped as they tend not too do that , go have a look and listen , 👍😁

Blimey, that is way over price and not even low mileage.
Please dont rush into this; I see it is reserved. There are so many good jdm cars around, be patient and travel. Buy from an enthusiast. As an 1st UK owner of a jdm car, I'd honestly say it's better to buy from a Subaru specialist or enthusiast after it's been in the uk for a year or two. Problems will have been ironed out by a good owner.
Also ask for a BIMTA certificate guaranteeing mileage. Don't buy without an inspection from a Subaru specialist as this is overpriced and questionable

Thanks for the replies. Few of you saying it’s over priced which is making me second guess purchasing at this price. The grade is a very high grade car 4B and 1 previous owner do you still think it’s over priced? I also prefer one that hasn’t been messed with too much and this is a standard car.

cheers

It's overpriced. JDM STI 4B with £50K mid to high teens? 20s if the underneath is immaculate and comes with some JDM history.

Whatever you do, when buying a JDM car is ask the seller for the VIN number. Use CarVX and get a check on the cars history. For a bit more, you can also have the grading sheet translated.

As said above, figures closer to £30K should really be for limited editions.

Any thing japs gone fairly mental price wise , my Fsti 12200 £ now 18k £ , set your budget , say that’s what you are looking at and go from there , the benefit about jdm models 99 per cent of the time based on it being the better auction houses , as some are in the mountain areas so it’s like sort of buying a uk car ( wet climate ) they are generally very rust free and the nearest you can get to buying a new care body work wise , good luck do your checks first 👍😁

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ve just been made aware that the car was reserved for someone else last night, yesterday I was emailing the garage and finalising the deal for the car then was told this morning that it’s been reserved for someone else. Bit naughty on their end I feel but that’s life I suppose. Hopefully be another one show up soon, I did feel the car was up for a bit too much aswell so maybe a blessing in disguise 🥸.

Ask TorqueGT about spec c hawk or even RA for that price
You can put back oem parts and sell upgraded ones taking some money back like i did with coilovers, exhaust, brakes etc
its 17y old car with old bushes, tired suspension and poor brakes

Holy cow, £27.5K for a hawk STi! That's insane even with the mileage. I currently have a widetrack spec c 17" for sale for almost half that albeit with higher miles and a few bits that need tidying. £15k and it's yours.
I wonder what my Spec C Type RA with 37k miles must be worth

I doubt that you would loose any money at all on Adam's car above......and it's leagues above a standard sti.
The Fairmont car will probably loose 10k by driving out the showroom.

That hawk is stupidly over priced. They had a Type r limited for close to £60k yeah I would love for prices to be that high because I own one but looking at it now its not a realistic price.

If you would consider a Blob go look at @adam.pah one. Sooner rather than later because with all the insanely prices imprezas about thats a lot of performance car for your money. The limited editions like the spec c always command more money.

They only made 74 wide track 17” spec c’s. That’s not a typo, 74!
