Help me choose a turbo
Good morning everyone, I'm currently working on a 2002 WRX (EJ205 M/T).
I'm looking to get around 300-320 HP. As of now, modifications include ported heads and BC 272 cams.
*STOCK BOTTOM END*
I need help finding a turbo that will excel in that range, minimizing lag as much as possible/as quick to spool as possible as this is meant to be a fun car for the streets. Price range I'm looking for is around 1500.
Most information I can find is old. I've read about companies that make TD04s to order. TD05's seem to be the more common option. I have also heard of older companies that have since gone such as Deadbolt, Andy Forrest, Scoobyclinic, etc. There seem to be a million options for TD05s but it seems like a TD04 may be the better pick.
Help me out here!

If you're looking for that sort of bhp why not throw on a vf34/35. Would be a lot cheaper too.
Don't forget 5 speed gearbox. Broken too many of them in a classic

You are sort of working against yourself a little having those cams in. They will move the power band to the right, trading low end performance for gains to be made in the higher revs. Not really where you want the power band to be with a small turbo.

-Nossy, I have another engine I'm going to build down the line when the bottom end on the first motor breaks - so I want some "slight" future proofing. I might get blast plates for the 5 spd, not sure how much it'll help. Fully expecting it to shatter when I need it most. Only thing I've learned so far is to not build a Subaru!
-Danjo, that's true - I had them installed prior to having a full plan. As the bottom end is going to stay stock, I realized I couldn't go as high as I wanted.
I guess I should emphasize I don't want to completely eliminate the idea of a higher power band, but as I have to limit some power to avoid breaking this car I need to take advantage of the HP. I'm open to any suggestions as this is my first time working with a newer car. I'm new to all this stuff.
Do either of you have any suggestions for a turbo?

As above the turbos I mentioned mate. You could get them rebuilt and you should see up to about 380bhp @adam.pah looked into this some time back I think.
Technology has moved on so not sure what the current stuff is in the price range you mentioned but years back it was the blouche stuff.

a VF34 would be the 'best' choice IMO and both your bottom end & gearbox will generally cope with the circa 350 that its capable of........
if you do want to stay lower then a TD04 modified hybrid would do early 300's or modify the VF34 and go slightly higher than 350......
know a man that offers them at very good pricing also funnily enough.......

@Henrik has played around with turbos, should should read his thread in the projects section here https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...th-a-td04.html

I’ve had a billet VF35 on a 5 speed. Bhp estimate around 360ish. Power felt very linear with not much lag and didn’t tail off at top end either, was a nice setup.

I think mine is probably about 310-320bhp (not dynoed, but according to mapper), and it's a td04HL turbine housing with a 19t compressor wheel.
For low 300s I am super happy with my spool and lag characteristics. For a 2.0 you might even want to stay on the td04L turbine housing (is that the US td04 standard housing?), which will make spool a bit better at the expense (maybe) of some top end power.
I built my turbo myself, but if you're not used to spannering I think you could buy one similar to mine from AS Performance (though I see you're in the states - I'm sure Blouch will have something similar).

I don’t know if it will work as well on a 2 litre , the vf41 out of the Fsti , is a great turbo , very little lag , on full boost just after 2 k revs , tops out around 330 / 340 bhp , i had a 2 litre sti wagon with around 350 plus bhp , the foz would walk all over it with a lot less bhp , and it was so much more drive able 👍
