I have bought a Damd wheel off Fpan i am planning to fit it in my widetrack. What are the pitfalls to look out for ? I have looked for instructions i can print off without success. All advice gratefully received
Disconnect the battery, keep foot on the brake pedal for a bit to discharge the system and then take a T30 (IIRC) key to the screws in the back of the wheel to free the airbag. Pull off carefully (although may need a gentle tug to release it) and use a small screwdriver to free the connector for the airbag. Disconnect the horn button and that should be you. Stick a (21mm?) socket on the nut and loosen a little (so it doesn't hit you in the face when you come to pull it), then knock the current wheel with a sharp bang on one side and this should be enough to free it. Remove the nut completely, pull off and replace in the reverse order of disassembly. It really isn't too difficult if you're handy with spanners. The hardest bit is usually getting the Torx screws aligned to go into the airbag at the right angle.
The clock spring is the bit to be careful of. Have a bit of masking tape handy to hold it at the top, and make sure you keep a hold of it when you pull the wheel off so it doesn't rotate round - there's a little rubber plug on it which aligns to the steering wheel so it won't rotate as soon as you loosen the nut off, but definitely be careful. They're cheap to replace but still a PITA so just go careful to stop it rotating uncontrolled and in doing so, damaging itself.
