Hi mate and welcome to the forums. Have you checked your PCV valve. (I must sound like a broken record) But its one of those things that seems to get overlooked.

ebay part checker tends to be a bit hit and miss, depends a lot on how the seller has filled out the listing. Theres a guy who rebuilds turbos called craig bellworthy I think. Mostly positive reviews, give him a shout.

At the back you will need to remove a pipe then use a socket to get to the PCV valve. But you will need to remove your top mount intercooler if you have one. Once you have it give it a good shake and see if its free moving, you will be able to hear.

My one got blocked, killed the turbo and took the engine out with it.

On a 2.5 I think the STI cames with a VF48. You might also need supporting mods to run it.

if it was me ,and it is definitely the turbo that has an issue , i would just send it off and get it rebuilt , if you bolt on an sti one , it will probably need injectors re map etc ££ , your call 👍

When it took your turbo out were there any signs before hand?

The WRX and STi have different induction systems so turbos are not interchangable
The WRX comes with a flanged outlet similar to Legacy models

A UK WRX comes with a TD04L 13t version
The upgraded WRXSS version not the UK's WRXs comes with a VF52 which is a popular upgrade in the US.

However it is possible to use an STI VF34 but with a suitable VF52 compressor casing/outlet fitted.

Smoke from the exhaust more than there should have been. Oil leaking when it got really bad and found loads of oil in the intercooler.

expensive road to go down. You will need the turbo, Sti injectors, higher flow fuel pump, de cat down pipe, car re mapped, and then your engine will be in the dangerous position that 2.5 STI’s are where the extra boost pressure over the standard WRX can compromise the head gaskets and piston ring land.
Add extra stress on the weaker 5 speed gearbox compared to the strong 6 speed box and what might look like a cheap £250 sti turbo upgrade could turn into a 5 grand repair bill.
