Free trade deal with Japan.

Free trade deal with Japan.
Does a free trade deal with Japan mean no import tax on private imports of vehicles or goods, or would only trade importers benefit, if at all? I'm thinking that at the very least imported Jap goods will become cheaper...............or is it just wishful thinking?

Jan 2021 UK starts trading on it's own WTO tariff regime, which is different to the EU regime. It's been simplified with lots of products reduced in rate.
If UK sign an FTA with Japan then everything covered in the FTA trade on those terms, those terms apply to everyone, be they a single person or a company.
The current plan is to have an FTA in place with Japan that replaces the terms of the recently agreed EU-Japan deal and to have this in place by Jan 2021.
The negotiations are attempting to improve the terms of the EU-Japan deal to best suit the UK and Japan with it covering more products and services, the full details of this we have to wait for, as it's still under negotiation.

Japan are pushing for zero tariffs on cars, UK are pushing for zero on cheese.
Latest is UK want to wait till 2025 for the cars going zero rated. Could be sorted this week if they manage to sort the cheese out.

lol Reddit is good for the comments to get different views and opinions. But be careful of the subreddit, some are biased to a certain political view point. Its not the easiest on the Web view, much better through the app. Took me a while to figure out the comments structure lol.

The main area they are trying to open up most is financial services and general agriculture.

In case you missed it the deal has been agreed, now needs to be ratified by UK and Japan governments. Fine detail will come out in that process.
