I'd never seen this before... but maybe I am the only one - if so, flame me.

The guy filling up a grubby red MY98 in front of me yesterday appeared to not be actually holding the fuel nozzle whilst filling up. I thought that he must have been waiting for the pump to start, but then noticed that he had put the plastic filler cap in between the nozzle trigger and the metal surround _around_ the trigger. Hey presto, you don't have to hold the nozzle while filling up!

Thumbs up

If you look on the actual filler handle there are some holes both in the surround and on the trigger.

In years gone by there was a metal plug attached that you could feed through the holes, and hence not have to hold the filler. For some reason garages removed them about 8 years ago

Theye were removed because of the danger involved.

If you go to a HGV section they still have them due to the amount of fuel taken on.

Watch not all pumps have auto cut off.

Wink

I used to have a big split pin that used to go through the holes in the nozzle, meaning that I could use the little latch that is still there on the handle.

It's a good idea to do something like this, as Super Unleaded has a high Benzine content which is carcinogenic (causes cancer)

Long and the short of it is not to breathe in the fumes whilst filling up.

If you can activate the nozzle without having to stand there squeezing the handle, you can stand slightly upwind of the pump.

Oh, and yes, the auto cut off still works.

Cheers

The pumps here in Ireland still have a little lever that you flick which holds the lever up so you can fill up with no hands and the cutoff still works.

I remember the little levers too. I was told once that they were removed because people used to do practical jokes which were rather dangerous - i.e. put the nozzle back in the pump holder after you have finished, and then put the clip in place. Then, when the next person takes the nozzle out of the pump, petrol sprays everywhere.

Those people had a strange idea of humour!

Looking at a different post above.... Yes, the cut-out still happens OK.

Question

I find you have to have the pump nozzle half way out of the car, and at a funny angle to get the fuel in. Anyone else have this problem?

Tell me about it! It can take ages to fill up an impreza at some pumps as the nozzle keeps cutting out. Just emphasises how much petrol they use.

had this problem with quite a few pumps when filling my MY 99 wagon until i realised some pump nozzles dont go far enough past a small flap about 6 inch down the filler tube.
If this is not pushed far enough back fuel spills onto it and the pump thinks your full up as it sprays back
To overcome this i turn the nozzl 90 degrees with the handle to the rear of the car so it fits a bit further down the filler tube and past the flap hey presto no more probs
